Great Article at the Sierra Club About LA Bike History

IN 1900, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIANS CREATED a futuristic traffic structure catering to the mechanical marvel of the day--the bicycle. It opened along a corridor known as the Arroyo Seco, named for the seasonal stream that flows from the San Gabriel Mountains and enters the Los Angeles River just north of downtown Los Angeles.

It’s great to see that quadricycles are as old as bicycles. But it’s sad that all of these forms of transportation were quickly taken over by cars. I wonder what the smog / pollution situation would be like if bikes had held out as strong form or transportation in the US. I don’t think it’s to far fetched to think that bikes could have held on as a strong commuting option if bike lanes were developed as roads specifically designed for cars were.
