A Guide through the Health and Safety Passports Maze

"I need to see your passport security before they can enter the site." Literally hundreds of thousands people hear the phrase, or something like that every day in the UK and yet protective passports may seem a black art to some. What are they? Where I can get one and which one is more important than I can get? They are the dilemmas that most people face.

Well, let me see if I can demystify health and safety passports industry a bit for you!

In the UK there are three main actors, each has issued over six figures worth of protective passports to individual contractors.

• The Head of Client Group of National Security - CCNSG (also known as Lee
• Construction Skills Certification Scheme - CSCS Card
• The security pass Alliance (SPA) - (also known as Epic card, the card UKPIA, Food Card and Passport to Safety

So I need more than one passport?

The problem is that it is up to the client as to what particular passport scheme, implement in place. Some passports are interchangeable with a client and CCNSG and Spa, which at least is interchangeable is the CSCS card, but it is always worth checking with the first client.

CCNSG

The CCNSG which was the original passport security of all of them tends to be used Power Generation industries, steel, oil, gas and chemicals. It is a generic system, which is not industry specific and therefore open to customers outside the industry of building engineering.

The passport is obtained after taking two days of basic health and generic training security and pass a multiple choice test.

CSCS card

The CSCS card is mainly used in the construction industry. - No training required.

To obtain a CSCS card workers are required to have completed a test of 45-minute multiple choice in health and safety in construction. It is a test based on the screen and there is a maximum of 40 questions to answer. Workers can choose to attend a course of construction health and safety awareness in advance.

SPA Passport

SPA (Safety Pass Alliance), have a passport that has developed modular with many industries, including food and beverages, Cantera, retail gasoline General Manufacturing, Maintenance of Buildings, Pharma, Construction, Ports, Logistics, and other discharges.

The passport is usually two days training. The first day is "The Day Core" that provides generic Health and Safety training. The second day is a specific industry that deals with the particular security needs of that sector. An understanding is assessed by multiple-choice delegates.

So What is the Passport?

As evidence that the contractors have successfully completed training, the contractors are issued with a "plastic" photo pass. This allows the client to restrict entry to those who can prove they have followed the training by presenting their passport upon arrival at each site.

Another question I get asked all the time is - Then you work?

It has always been difficult to quantify the results of the implementation of a safety passport system in place, but in the last two years, the SPA will have to publish the results of customers. Articles complete can be found on the SPA website but here are some excerpts from the articles below:

The introduction of passport security Nestlé in the UK was part of a review and adjustment of all our procedures for managing contractor safety. This has resulted a reduction in accident statistics contractor by 68 percent in the last two years.

Metronet using the SPA passport subway as part of the Health and Safety Initiative led to a 75 percent reduction in the statistics accident in 18 months.

Leicester City Council - The first local authorities in England to present the Security SPA Maintenance Building Maintenance passport for the operators of the house has seen a 32 percent drop in accident rates in the last three years.

So there you have it, we train literally thousands of contractors a year and I hope I have managed to clarify some common questions that people asked us every day of the week.
