6 Fun Facts about the History of Alabama Crimson Tide
The Alabama Crimson Tide has had tremendous success in all its football history. Here are some facts that are less commonly known.
At the University of Alabama, football is king. school squad playing field has won numerous national titles, has been renowned coaches and players, and even appears in the movie "Forrest Gump." While most fans of "Alabama", "Bama" or "UA" know these details, you might not be aware of some others. Here are some facts about Alabama football, football fans unless know:
1. The "Crimson Tide" nickname originated from a game of mud
Before becoming the Alabama Crimson Tide, ordinary people referred of Alabama football team as the White "Crimson" (named after the school colors) or "The Thin Red Line." Then in 1907, Alabama played its rival, Auburn. Alabama was a big underdog, and teams played in a "sea" of red clay. However, Alabama Auburn struggled to a draw 6-6. Later, a sports editor named Zipp Newman popularized the nickname "Crimson Tide".
2. Alabama No player has won the Heisman Trophy
Ironically, despite all the success the football team Alabama Crimson Tide, no player has won the Heisman Trophy, an award given to the most outstanding NCAA football player in one season. In 1993, David Palmer became the closest of Alabama player to win the prize. David "The Deuce" Palmer, played wide receiver for the Crimson Tide, and later played seven seasons with the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL.
3. Alabama has won 21 SEC titles
The record for the Crimson Tide football is just outstanding. Here are some of its achievements over the years:
• 12 national titles
• 25 Conference titles (21 SEC)
• 51 Bowl Games
• 92 All-American Players
4. Paul "Bear" Bryant a .834 winning percentage as coach of Alabama
Coach "Bear" Bryant is a legend in Alabama. He led the Crimson Tide to six national championships which is half of all time 12 team national titles. Bryant also coached at the University of Texas A & M University, the University of Kentucky and the University of Maryland. However, Alabama, where he was Bryant's most successful. Bryant earned the nickname "Bear" when, at age 13, had to fight a bear theater as part of a promotion.
5. Alabama's elephant mascot dates back to 1930
The source of the elephant mascot of the school was the season 1930. At that time, Coach Wallace Wade was the team in general. During a game against Mississippi, Alabama, one fan shouted: "... the elephants are coming!" referring to the big Alabama, aggressive players. Everett Strupp, a sports journalist reported the incident.
6. Three former Alabama coaches are in the Hall of Fame College Football
From the Hall of Fame opened in South Bend, Indiana (1951), has admitted to 16 players Alabama, and three coaches. The coaches were initiated Wallace Wade (1923-1930), Frank Thomas (1931-1946), and Paul "Bear" Bryant (1958-1982). The Hall Bryant led Fame player and coach.
