Golden Isles, Georgia: Jekyll and St. Simon

The Golden Isles are located near Brunswick, Georgia. The islands of Jekyll and St. Simon can be reached by road. Each is as different from each other as Universal Studios is Disney World.

Jekyll Island was our first stop. In order to preserve the historic significance of the Island, real estate development has been limited to thirty percent of the island. This leaves the beaches and miles of bicycle trails (an easy walk from the ground). Touring the historical center is the main focal point of this island. During the late 1800s, the island was sold to a group of northern businessmen, who formed the Jekyll Island Club one of the world's most exclusive clubs. Some members included Frank Goodyear, Edwin and George Gould, JP Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer and William Rockefeller, who used Island for the summer "cottages." First they built the Jekyll Club House, a large four-story club. Today is a four star hotel. Can might even sleep in the same room as a Vanderbilt. The country house owned by the crane (the plumber) is also available. Some of the cottages are undergoing restoration, but most of the work has been done outside.

Not much happened while these millionaires stayed there. The first draft Federal Reserve Act was drafted in 1910. The president of AT & T made the first transcontinental telephone Woodrow Wilson in Washington, Alexander Graham Bell in New York and Thomas Watson, in San Francisco. After World War II, he sold the island to Georgia for use as a state park. Today is a playground for all and not is as exclusive as it once was.

The historical museum gives a history of the island since the early days of Native Americans, through the history of the Revolution until today. Of particular interest are the exhibits in the restoration of the cottages: the use of different materials and architectural designs.

A trip around the island revealed the ruins of Horton's house, and brewery, which gave comfort to the soldiers stationed on St. Simon Island, just north of Jekyll Island.
To get to St. Simons Island has to drive back on the road, drive through Brunswick, home of Brunswick stew, and then the other roadway to the island. The first impression of the island is the large amount of traffic and the number of houses and shopping malls.

Our first stop was to the northern section of the island and Fort Frederica National Monument. In 1736 General James Oglethorpe began an earthwork fortress to defend British interests from the Spanish invasion South. In addition to strong growth in the town of Frederica prospered until the troops left the fort in 1749 after having defeated the Spanish at the Battle Bloody Marsh. A few years later fire leveled the town and any remaining settlers greener pastures. Today visitors can see the movements of land, the foundations of houses and shops along tree-lined boulevards and ruins of the bastion. A film in the visitor center shows the life of the inhabitants of the city. It is based on actual records on the site. Walking around town you can envision families and their fiefdoms. The cemetery contains the remains of many early settlers. None names remain, only souvenirs.

From the village is six miles long military road, built in three days by Oglethorpe and his men. This Bloody road leads to March, the site of the battle. Along the road is Christ Episcopal Church, where John and Charles Wesley preached to the early settlers. After a while they tired of the moral laxity of his congregation, packed their bags and returned to England. There, they found that people of like mind and standards moral, resulting in Methodism.

At the southern tip of the island is the lighthouse and museum. The original lighthouse was destroyed by Confederate troops during the War Civil. Visitors can climb to the top of the view of the surroundings. Around the lighthouse is the old town of St. Simons, who grew up to support the people of the lighthouse.
