Early Race Driver One

Selwyn Edge was born in 1868 in the city of Concord, near Sydney, Australia. When I was three, his parents moved England. As a young boy, Selwyn was interested in cycling and won his first bike race when he was nineteen. He was later hired by Selwyn Dunlop Tire Company as director of the office. Edge bought his first car, a De-Dion Bouton in 1896. 1897 Selwyn had started to become interested in cars. In 1899, together Herbert Charles Duncan Jarott and formed De Dion-Bouton Ltd. Edge had also befriended Montague Napier Napier & Sons, as both men were avid cyclists. In 1898, Edge asked Napier to make some improvements in the Panhard car. Then, in 1899, Edge Cros Harvey and organized the Society of Motor Vehicles, Ltd to sell the best cars in Napier. Unlike any other UK distributor of the time Edge recognized the value of racing as a marketing tool. He realized that the publicity provided by the racing would be to increase sales. Edge Napiers began to enter in various races. The Napier came in 1900, the Automobile Club of First Instance won Thousand Miles in his class as one of thirty-five finalists out of sixty-four starters. Your Napier returned to win the Gordon Bennett Cup race 1902. In the meantime learned the edge that Sir Hugh Locke-King was the construction of a closed-circuit motor racing track at Brooklands. While British law imposed a strict limit twenty miles speed car drivers. Edge quickly realized the potential value of Brooklands and began to encourage Locke-King in his endeavor. He made a commitment public to drive one of their cars for twenty-four hours non-stop to 65 mph.

Edge had also hired a secretary named Dorothy Levitt, quickly took his enthusiasm for cars. He taught her to drive and has won several titles in Britain. When he opened Brooklands, wine Edge his team of pilots as they had promised, and Levitt was one of them. He was denied the opportunity to race at Brooklands not allow women drivers in the course. However, Edge then your employee as a pilot factory and sent to Europe to promote Napier.

Edge had prepared well for his career at Brooklands. He had hired in a physical training program to build their personal resilience. When the race started easily Edge kept his promise, the course driving for 24 hours at 65 miles per hour without a rest stop. The other two drivers in the team stopped to rest. It would be thirteen years before any conductor could break the record set Edge in that race.

In 1912, Edge sold its concession to Napier and signed an agreement pledging not to engage in the manufacture of cars for seven years. At the end of this time, Edge AC Cars purchased, but the company went bankrupt in 1929. After that, Edge not involved with motor cars. He died in 1940.
