Friday the 13th - the Ultimate Biker Experience
If you like cycling and cyclists company, then you will be intrigued by what happens in City of Port Dover in Ontario, Canada, when the calendar conspires to produce a rare Friday 13. Billed as "the most important cycling event in Canada" Port Dover 13 (PD 13) attracts more than 100,000 bikers and enthusiasts every friday 13 to the city on the north shore of Lake Erie. Every Friday, the 13th, the whole town closes vehicles with four wheels, with the exception of local residents and providers, such as Port Dover in the sky becomes a motorist.
The tradition began in 1981, when Chris Simons persuaded 25 of his biker friends to travel to Port Dover in Ontario on Friday, November 13, meeting at the Commercial Hotel to celebrate the feeling to be a cyclist. They had a great time to be committed to return to Port Dover on Friday after all 13 PD 13 so the tradition was born. Some 26 years later the Commercial Hotel has changed its name to Angelos, but still serves in the headquarters of the meeting on Friday 13.
In PD 13 are all sizes, shape and motorcycle, Harleys, Hondas, Yamaha and other models the proud standard road bike custom worth tens of thousands of dollars each. Also find a similar diversity in the corridors with all classes, religions and both sexes well represented, as they descend in the port of Dover pure cycling festival. Many of the topics of conversation are covered in the event, though mostly to do with bicycles, such as performance problems, the cost of tires, increased cost of motorcycle insurance and general running costs of everyday life associated with owning a bicycle.
The case has expanded both now also includes a day of music with artists. 2007, for example, saw the performance of cyclists favorites "Steppenwolf - authors of the biker anthem "Born to be Wild." Because of its size and stature, the event is now worth major corporate sponsorship and instead of resenting the intrusion, many residents find ways to harness local event from the rental of lawn space for tents on the sale of cold beer and jerseys. All day attracts media attention in Canada and in 2007 Toronto classic rock station Q107 broadcast live from the event, organized by Canada's top DJ John Derringer.
Anyone can attend an event of 13 PD and costs only € 220 for a weekend rental of bicycles, which also includes insurance motorcycle to be part of Canada's largest events cyclists. But if you are tempted to travel from the UK to see the experience of the Port of Dover for you, make sure the bike hire far in advance as they sell out quickly for weekends Friday the 13th.
