Nuts and Bolts: The Lowdown

They may be small, but it would be difficult to find a structure of the machine that do not. Bolts can look like they were invented in the mists of time. However, bolts and provide functionality as one of the most used fasteners is unparalleled.

The clips can be defined as objects containing one object to another.

Closing cover everything from the nails of the rivets and screws. A phone is held together about 75 fasteners, a car with 3,500, and an aircraft with 1,500,000. The Mach 3 SR-71 spy plane is made of titanium. And yes, you have the screws and nuts, and all are made of titanium.

In the U.S., about 600 companies make the fasteners. They employ about 60,000 workers, and do about 250 billion each year fasteners, screws included.

In an average product, about 50% of total production time is dedicated to uniting the elements the set. Fasteners such as bolts occupy approximately 5% of the total production cost, but when you add the cost of placing these fasteners, about 30% of final value is used.

Threaded fasteners, including nuts and bolts common, they serve a major role. They must be able to provide sufficient retention force to resist any external pressure applied to them, such as weight or moving forces. It is interesting to note that often is taken for granted actually bolt has tons of mathematical formulas related to their use.

The Romans invented the first wood screws to hold the parts together. Wood screws were bronze or silver. The wires were made through filing, or by welding in a coiled cable. However, the screw was lost with the fall of the Empire Romano. The next reference to the screws came in early 1400.

In late 1400, John Guttenberg screws used in his famous press. Apparently no one noticed account of Leonardo Da Vinci's designs since late 1400 for thread cutting machines, because the first machine for cutting screws was built in 1568 by the mathematician French, Jacques Besson.

In the decade of 1400 made her debut bolt. The bolts are basically screws had straight sides and had blunt ends. The nut, bolt partner in crime was handmade and very raw. There was no standard for creating them. The engineers first had to go through a lot screws and nuts to see if they matched each other.

During the Industrial Revolution, threaded fasteners shown that products could be assembled quickly and easier if used. The next big step came in 1801, when lathes improved to the point of being able to produce nuts and bolts to match.

The invention the day, Henry Maudsley, an English inventor. He built a lathe that could cut the bolts of any diameter and height (the height is the distance from a small hill in the thread, to the next small hill). Between 1800 and 1810, his invention become relatively benign art of the nuts and bolts in a science serious engineering.

But there was a problem. Uniform standards for holding a thread - small hills and valleys and sizes - no more. In 1841, Joseph Whitworth presented his paper of a uniform system of threads to the Institution of Civil Engineers. This article describes the ideal pitch, depth and shape of the thread. He also said that the angle between the wires should be 55 degrees.

Without nuts and bolts many industries that have difficulty keeping things together. To the mechanic, the right offer nuts and bolts is critical. He can not leave home without them.
