Chinese Snuff Bottles - Sensations in Glass!

The first decided to buy bottles that were not carved in stone out of glass. A wide range of bottles glass is found in all shapes and colors as well as a variety of manufacturing techniques.

Much more research is needed to date these bottles, but it is generally agreed that the glass bottles and metal were the first materials to be used. The problem is that the glass has been used for throughout the entire period up to snuff bottle today.

The Chinese had little use for the glass before the 17th century, mainly due to their skills highly refined porcelain. They had no glass windows, which favors the translucent paper. We're not sure if the glass had been used centuries before in China, but certainly was introduced to Europe in time for snuff bottles.

Cameo Glass

They regard it as a valuable and important material in the production works of fine art. Sometimes they treated him like a stone carving and bottles from a solid piece, otherwise, blowing glass into molds. The creation of many unusual bottles, from clear to white as the background for the work of overlapping colors. They were also able to control bubbles and by the addition of white spots on glass, colors as these names suggest apt were created: - Snow soaked, camphor, and flakes of snow.

These bottles are then dipped into molten glass brightly colored later to be carved away to leave a cameo design style. Some plunged more than once to provide more than one layer of color. Another technique is applied to different areas of color bottle glass melted spots. When they were carved the bottle could have up to eight different colors cameo cut without increasing the number of layers.

Quality Counts

A connoisseur, the number of colors or layers is not so important, because it was not a difficult process and a much softer material to carve than stone. What really should be judged is the quality of height and overall design. Very often a well-designed and beautifully carved color overlay only be worth much more than a colorful bottle that went wrong.

To assess these bottles color is a consideration but is provided much attention as with cameo carved in stone, the quality of the carving and especially how well the fund is close to finishing up the edge of the template. I selected a single red ruby overlay as a good example to shoot. It shows a spiral "Chih lung" or dragon on both sides; mythological animal mask also and mock ring handles on each shoulder from 1750 to 1860. The dragon is a sign used in place of birth as our zodiac signs. (See photo by clicking on the link at the bottom of this article.)

There is a group of very special, very finely worked bottles known as the overlay "Seal of the school", as they always include a stamp with the design. They were made later and date from the second half of the 19th century.

Although these were made in the same way, the template is much more delicately carved and often even the coating thickness is controlled to create shading. Usually used bottles opaque white background, but others were also worked in other opaque colors. So far, I've never seen any in the funds clear or snowflake. * The photograph shows a bottle or school seal depicting a pair of cats who play with insects flitting among the flowers. Each side is a bowl of fruit on a table and on the reverse is another scene a drunken poet who sleeps in a garden. (* See the photograph by clicking the link at the bottom of this article.)

The layers of glass

Apart overlap of these types are many interesting mottled, swirling designs and color, and plain bottles, both uncut and cut.

Many of these were very complex in how they were made: some were destroyed in the mold then finished by hand, others involved a clear glass blowing in a mold, but then another layer was blown inside the first bottle. This layer was a thin colorful one, however, sandwiched by a third clear layer was also blown in. When you look at the neck of one of these bottles can clearly see these three layers.

A variety of colors were used successfully, along with gold in the creation snuff bottles. There is no doubt that their advanced knowledge acquired in porcelain firing, and how they react metal oxides, was subjected to good use glass.

It was suggested that, apart from the mixture of metals, even small particles of precious stones such as sapphires, emeralds and rubies were added to molten glass.

Special attention was paid to the feeling of the finished material, which was achieved by the kind of polished and even the weight of was controlled by the addition of lead. Transparent bottles inside could be controlled, and presented like crazy these names suggest - crushed ice, fish net or Sea Spray.

Most of the really fine snuff bottles were made in the Imperial Workshop and other small glass works all over Beijing.

Imitation Stone

With this knowledge the Chinese were able to do amazing imitations of other materials. There are many bottles that look and feel like Jade, Aquamarine, Agate and other stones. There was a view in the past that the Chinese made these as counterfeit, with intent to deceive. I am sure that this was not the case because it was too easy to find out by careful inspection. Under magnification small holes in the surface could not be polished out and small bubbles would demonstrating that it must be glass. Finally, unlike glass stones can be very easily scratched by steel.

The Chinese were doing imitations convincing valuable minerals as a demonstration of his ability. A copy of other minerals Realgar skillfully with their bright red and yellow swirls, impossible use due to high arsenic content, so these copies have been caused a lot of intrigue.

Imperial Yellow

I have already mentioned that a wide range was used to color glass bottles. Colors like blue sapphire and ruby red seem to have been the most popular of the oldest. However, the Emperor Chien-Lung had a favorite color that the decree could only be used for the imperial family and this was a dull shade of yellow is now known as `Imperial Yellow '.

Not all bottles of this color really are Imperial as after his death, this color is available for everyone. A bottle of truth 'Imperial Yellow' must be one of his time and can only be confirmed by the quality of the bottle and height. The bottle 'Imperial Yellow' in the picture is well carved with an archaic on both sides and is the period of 1736-1795. (See the photograph by clicking the link at the bottom of this article.)

Inside Painted

There is one other area of glass bottles that really amazes everyone, these bottles is the inside painted `. I have only a couple of examples of the collection, it usually does not Please give as in my opinion, were never made for use. When snuff was placed in them the image is not presented well, and spoon soon ruin the paint.

I also say it is not restricted inside the paint for glass, but have applied the same techniques for glass and Chalcedon. The vast majority however, are glass bottles especially designed in a uniform manner.

What is remarkable is that through a small hole in the neck that could paint the inside landscapes, animals, calligraphy and even portraits. For the image to show through glass painting had to be reversed, all these fine details such as tabs for example, had to be painted first! All these bottles are signed by the artist and many, some very attractive too, are still being made today.

For our own collection I felt that we should have one or two examples and I was lucky enough to buy the oldest known, dated and signed inside painted bottle Kan-Huan Wen. He is one of the first artist well known and highly respected. He has painted the interior of a rock crystal bottle, a scene of Buddhist Lions with a poem on the back. This bottle is signed and dated 1822. (See the photograph by clicking the link at the bottom of this article.)

Later acquire another example of rock crystal, and these two are the only bottles painted inside we have. I think this is quite remarkable, since the interior space is so limited is difficult to imagine how a beautiful painting was achieved on a surface without completely ruining the other.

At first it would have been very wrong bottle double. I do not know if the media has been removed damaged was done before it was painted, but I think it would have been. This was a very bad bottle hollow, low-value, before it was painted.

In my opinion, is the fact that it was so bad hole that makes the painting even more amazing! Check out the picture. A scene continuous fish between aquatic plants is painted red, gold, pink, white, green and grisaille dated 1896 and signed Chan Chu-Yuan. This glass has a natural flaw in the stone that adds to the appeal of water under this image. (See the photograph by clicking the link at the bottom of this article.)

Most glass bottles purposefully made to paint the interior are much higher than the glass. Some of the paintings made however are difficult to believe possible. There are even pictures that are so well done that are just as well as black and white photo!
