Do all the sweeteners in candy corn leave you wondering whether or not it is healthy for your children? Somehow, it might just be. Candy corn just might increase thinking skills and improve grades! After to let them eat their fill, have your children use the sweet treats for some math on this Halloween season.
At a basic level, orange, yellow, white and parts can help teach colors and shapes. Mix with some M & M's for a ranking exercise for small fingers. Have children rearrange them together to make new forms.
Do you need an exercise that is a little harder? You could try using the candy corn for small board game markers. Candy corn bingo is a lot of fun - with the numbers on the grid to provide answers to the equations and sweets mark the spots. Kids can graph different amounts of candy corn. Making spinners from cardboard with the arrows in the form of sweet corn can provide another fun way to work with numbers.
Have you ever noticed that the sweet corn - then flipped on its side - seem more than and less than "signs? Children can enjoy the math much more unequal when using candy for answers.
Then What about a couple issues of history? Tommy has 25 pieces of candy corn. If you give your brother of 20 pieces, how much has been made at all? Since the history of mathematics is very versatile, sweet corn is still useful when the degree of difficulty is stretched a little. Maybe they should find the square root the number of pieces of candy corn that Tommy has. Or maybe Tommy's sweet corn savings account will grow exponentially over the entire month of October until Halloween! Lucky Tommy. (And Tommy's dentist too ...)
How much does each individual piece of chocolate cost? This is an excellent math problem of life. To store loads at the best price? Try weighing the candy corn - or maybe try weighing the children after eating a few pounds of it!
A wedge huge bucket full of sweet little rascals provides a great guessing / estimation math exercise. And all could be awarded to the girl with the best estimate. Is there any way to make math a fairly accurate guess. Sweet Is worth doing the calculations of geometry? Hopefully the prize of fresh sweet corn right reasons.
Some students may enjoy the geometry of Internet Challenge Mathematics at the University of Idaho. The challenge involves taking candy is a perfect cone and reconfiguring its color dimensions. With each band of color that one third of the height, determine what fraction of total height of each color could occupy, if the colors were reversed caramel corn.
Mathematics and sweetcorn join the world of the imagination. Check the book The Candy Corn Contest by Patricia Reilly Giff for some interesting reading and exercises logic. In the book, a student can not stop thinking about his class contest. Which calculates the correct number of candies and yellow-orange in the cup stays with them. The only downside is that every attempt to guess the child needs to read a page of a book from the library.
Talk about brain food! Perhaps the sweet corn will be the sweet posters for teachers around. Not likely. But perhaps adding a little tasty entertainment to a math exercise can develop thinking and learning. You can also give the old excuse "the dog ate my homework" a little more credibility.
