Catapult on an aircraft carrier

How can launch such speeds are achieved with the reference system. Something along the lines of a piston Steam pumped up in pressure until it breaks a party specially designed and the aircraft is flung into the air. There are two issues left that seem relevant me (since both an engineer and retired Navy engineer):

1. Valve commissioning is a valve opening / closing fast.

2. Before the launch valve, the steam is "stored" in an accumulator steam, essentially a large insulated tank.

The combined accumulators and valve set-up is offered a large amount of high temperature steam and high pressure to the pistons in a very short time. There is definitely a release fast-acting valve, the length of time the valve is open is calculated based on the takeoff speed and weight of the aircraft. The device containment "is the part that breaks. The carrier takes a literal truck restraint devices for the duration of the trip, as it is a device single use only.

For ground operations, the aircraft can be criticized for the brakes until the engine is developing full thrust. To do this in a medium which had to find some form of coordination brake release with the opening of steam valve - and it's probably easier just to have a weak point in the system in place.

I do not believe that water is used as hydrauli fluid in the gear mechanism of detention. It is a water brake, but this is part of the catapult, no arrest gear. In the catapult, the pistons are driven by the steam necessary decellerate of ~ 160 mph to zero in a matter of feet. This is achieved by using a water brake "and the very hot water, and must be filled periodically.

Do not take fresh water too easily. A large amount of land arts-based detention is filled with water - things I would be surprised if the onboard was significantly different. According to the manual of LSO, the launch of the valves adjustable orifices to control the steam pressure in the pistons. The restraining device is also called a tension bar and when it breaks, the water vapor accumulated then expands to push the piston forward and the aircraft. Note that the manual explains the importance of pre-heating the entire assembly to ensure that energy Steam heating is not wasted on mechanical components. The manual carrier CEAN-MISC-06 900 is also a good authority, but only mentions "liquid" in the context of detention of gears. The same with the LSO Manual, "fluid," but never "water."

Very little steam escapes the catapult-the vast majority will be recovered and reheated. It is much easier to turn 211 degrees to boil water into steam to seawater from the start!

The catapult support structure is amazing, as is the water of ships brakes are designed as a giant cantilever beam with most of the displacement in the center and bow and stern as cantelievers. And I tell you what, the full arc of the ship shakes when the catapult slams on the brakes of water! All that massive steel and is still moving under the stress is incredible.

Preheating has other purposes as well. Like most metallic systems, catapults expand when heated. Be expanded significantly (I forget the number) from the ambient temperature. If you try to operate the catapult without the system is heated and expanded, I suspect that there will be significant mechanical problems, including even the possibility of replacing the ram. "Very little steam" escapes, this is relative. I believe that as the equivalent of more than a hundred gallons of water is lost in each shot of a cat, in the case of steam leakage is minimal.

From my experience, is not only the bow of the vessel sthat "trembles" at launch, I feel it everywhere on the boat! You can not really feel the bow cats outside the arc, or waist cats much outside of the sponson. I mean, there is some noise, but really not noticeable vibration and there is much noise from outside is drowned. If you're down second below deck and the stern frame of about 100 or so, I had never even know they were launching or recovery of aircraft.

I believe that use a lot of steam, but I can guarantee that they are not losing hundreds of gallons of water during the launch, there simply is much more than the steam coming through the slit, a couple of gallons, maybe ten gallons or less. If you are losing much steam over the catapult, it would lose pressure and stop accelerating towards the end but we just saw a bit of filtering. Perhaps it is a difference in the companies.
