Effects of carbon and its oxides in the environment

Until then, it was believed that plants purify the air during the day, and the poison in the evening. Carbon dioxide and its role in the connection between animal and plant life provides an explanation much more sophisticated in the ways plants "breathe."

Industry used carbon monoxide in a number of ways. Carbon is released into the atmosphere by one of three ways: cellular respiration, burning of fossil fuels and the eruption of volcanoes. When plants take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which, combined with water and manufacture organic compounds using the energy they have trapped the sun through photosynthesis, converting light into chemical energy through biological means. As a byproduct of photosynthesis, plants release oxygen into the atmosphere.

In the process of undergoing photosynthesis, plants produce carbohydrates, which are various compounds of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen essential for life. The other two key components of a diet are fats and proteins, both based on carbon as well. Animals eat plants or eat other animals that eat plants, and thus incorporate the fats, proteins and sugars (a form of carbohydrate) of the plants in their bodies. Cellular respiration is the process by which these nutrients are broken down to create carbon dioxide.

Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are thus linked in what is known as the carbon cycle. Cellular respiration also releases carbon into the atmosphere through the action of decomposers, bacteria and fungi that feed on the remains of plants and animals. Decomposers remove energy in chemical bonds of matter in decomposition, releasing more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
