You Do not Have To Be a Bike Racer hanging out with them
My friend Regina has been hounding me to participate in a walk on Tuesday morning and until this week, I always had an excuse to bail. This week, however, I decided to give it a try because I knew that the group is small, all the Masters, and as such the possibility a super driving experience was very high. I think most people have bent the last six months to see what economic curve balls would be thrown against us and I was no exception. Well, that's enough! The weekend trips are becoming faster and longer and there is no time like the present.
He three observations during this visit. First, riding with the cyclists Domain Masters is very soft. Everyone was at least a decent bike handler, but all looked where they were going and made a real attempt to travel in a straight line. Regina has been a friend of Toni and I almost a decade. I saw her get her first Colnago and learn to ride as an adult. She has always been super fit, but had never learned to ride a bike when I was young. As such, Regina had to overcome significant fears of the unknown and to these fears as an adult and a mother who "knows better."
Knowledge can lead a horse to water but you can not make them drink, continually speaks with Regina about learning the tricks of the competent road cyclists. With the power / weight than a small but strong woman who may have, Regina learned that could rise quickly to many men, but had not learned to harness that strength and power to make your travel more enjoyable. I think this is the way all approaches to riding with a group as opposed to riding with a group of cyclists. I see this pattern many times with triathletes who are traveling in a group. They have the potential and raw skills have not yet updated in this context.
Progress on this trip was very simple, really. I was next to Regina, when we were in the midst of a 3 / 4 miles up and two people ahead of us picked up the pace. (Yes, George was a of them!) As a small hole opened, I knew I could not answer, but asked Regina to close the gap. I went through two people at once and Regina last one of them, took the wheel on the next guy, then jumped to the wheel George, and finally he jumped the crest of the hill with Roberto, the leader!
Regina looked fantastic and really do not spend more energy than before, but that energy is used wisely. She interacted with the group instead of just riding step, regardless of the speed of the peloton. This "letting go" of individuality to join the squad is a big step. The potential for rapid improvement are important now.
This is the reason we encourage triathletes to get your road bike out once a week, and riding with a group a little faster they. Thus the intensity of the group can create an incentive to push beyond the perception limit. This is almost impossible to recreate the walk alone.
The lesson here is, Regina wanted to be in control of his pace in spite of what the group did, and finally "broke the code" to discover that she does not lose anything to join the herd, but you gain a different perspective and the ability to drive more people out of work.
Triathletes usually do not race when the draft and I think they miss a lot of learning and the creation of this range, avoiding the bike. If you run with the fastest runners, swimmers swim faster and cyclists riding the rapids, good things happen. Regina has shown that though never run, the tricks brokers use can and do make a big difference in the enjoyment of cycling too.
