First, ask yourself ...
Do your employees keep coming back to you when face the same challenges over and over?
When you as a leader, choose to coach your employee rather than just managing, you're putting in the time and effort to help employees to be better in the long term. The way you can have the greatest impact on the employee when coaching is to help them sort things out, complete tasks, make decisions and achieve their goals - all through their own efforts, using his own brain!
The best way to put them in a position to do so is first and foremost, think of all the ways that always fixed, counseling, telling, directing or rescuing them - and stop! When they come to you with a problem (which you would like to be able to ultimately resolve on their own) or a question (That you would like to know the response time on your own), put the ball in your court. Help them to sort things out by asking things like: What do you think the solution to this problem? What resources will have to perform this task? What do you think the best option in this scenario? How else could get around these obstacles? What is your plan for doing so? What can be learned from experiences in the past to help in this situation?
Simply by asking questions like these will help you engage employees in making decisions, help them be creative and think outside the box and help them take responsibility to do the job. But this process takes time, effort and patience on your end, so what are the benefits to you? Very simple and you will have more employees able to have more confidence in themselves, and best of all - the time spent being proactive now will result in savings of time putting out fires and reacting to problems in the future, so you and your team more productive!
