Owning a bar on a tropical island - it is really a dream?

On a good year, more than four million people visit Phuket in Thailand. Many of these users will love. Some love him so much I want to live here.

Each year, thousands of people go to Phuket in the hope of creating a new life in a tropical island. Many need to earn a living and quickly discover that employment opportunities for foreigners are very limited. What are your options? Well one of the avenues most likely to invest in their own business. And what is the easiest business to enter? Owning a bar.

For many people sounds like a dream. A life on a tropical island, beach days and party nights at the bar. But does the reality match the dream?

It's something I considered doing when I first arrived in Phuket. I reviewed the options, talked with real estate agents, bar owners, including bar girls. In the Finally, I decided it was not worth it.

I was back in Phuket and still naive many of the pitfalls that await the owners of bars, but still I could see there were many problems with owning a bar in Phuket. To begin with, "Owning a bar 'is a misnomer that is almost certainly leasing and probably in very unfavorable terms.

It is difficult to have a life worthy of a bar and in fact most fail in the first two years. Even if your bar has money, their work situation is likely to be illegal. The laws in Thailand are against foreigners owning a small business.

As much as all these things worried me were not my biggest concern. The most important factor in transforming me away from owning a bar was the style of life. I got to know quite a few bar owners and when I looked at his life, I knew it was not for me. It's just a life so shit.

I wrong. I love the night on the beer. Even more nights on the beer. But having to do it every night in the same bar as a job? Soon not lose its charm mention the obvious health problems that go with that lifestyle.

Since I made the decision to leave the bar business alone, there has been a second, when I looked towards back and regretted it. I know many owners of bars and consider several to be friends but never envy their lives. Recently, the untimely death of one of those friends really He took it home for me.

He was not yet 50 years of age. He owned a bar in one of the soles (alley) off Soi Bangla in Patong. It was a nice guy, quiet and easy to talk. Although I saw him no more than once a week, we always enjoyed a good chat and he was one of my favorite bar owners.

Over the previous year, he had some health problems. He had been in hospital several times and the advice of doctors was obvious and clear - stop drinking!

The problem is is very difficult to stop drinking when you own a bar. The two things to offer customers these small bars are the girls and the owner. And often Girls do not work very well if the owner is not there.

Regular customers to have a chat with the owner. Often, if the owner is not there just go to the next bar. Just for these bars to work, the owner has to be there most of the time.

So it is not possible my friend has been drinking soft drinks? Well, he did that for a few days, but boredom got to him. You spend the evening sitting in the bar, bombarded with music deafening bar these complexes seem to think it is a safe environment. For a good part of the night, you may not have any clients, but still needs to be there for case. You can watch TV but can not hear. His only company is the bar girls are probably bothered by time off or a free drink.

And when customers come, they want to get drunk and want to get drunk with them. Of course, that's fine for customers. If you are on holiday, are just what makes for two weeks before returning to their normal lives. The bar owner is doing it night after night, year after year.

Offer to buy drinks and is bad business to accept. If you do keep your discipline and stay sober after night is unbearable. Drunks are very entertaining when you're drunk with them. When sober, there's nothing worse than trying to laugh at his stupid ramblings.

So despite the warnings of the doctor, my friend was ready to drink again. It just goes with the territory of owning a bar, you drink a lot.

Everything met my friend. He had a bad motorcycle accident. I never drove drunk but Motorcycle accidents happen easily here. He himself discharged from hospital too soon, again ignoring medical advice. Their next meeting drunkenness was too much for a body that was tired of it. He died in his sleep.

The most crazy is that not even need the bar. He had worked hard on their country of origin and eligible for retirement. I and other friends had tried to persuade him to give up. The problem was that he was one of the owners of bars few who was making a good profit and it was difficult to get away from a good business. In the end, was too good to be a bar owner for his own good.

It strange to most people who buy in the bars have come to Phuket for a better lifestyle. They want to live in a tropical paradise. Phuket is your dream home and owning a bar is how they finance their life here. The problem is owning a bar excludes them from enjoying the island.

More bar owners wake up in the afternoon with a hangover. They lounge around her apartment to shake off the hangover budget until it is time to go to the bar and starts to work again. This could be done anywhere. Phuket's splendid beaches, islands and other tourist attractions are irrelevant to the bar owners, as almost not see them.

I know a couple of bar owners who do not even know there was a tsunami until the evening when they went to work. I know another that after three years in Phuket still I had not seen Phang Nga Bay, Phi Phi island, Nai Yang Beach, Nai Harn Beach, in fact anywhere more than a few kilometers from Patong.

Not I want to totally out of the bar potential owners. I just want to open our eyes to the kind of life that is purchased. I think for the type of character, in the circumstances appropriate, is an acceptable option. If you are young, you can handle this lifestyle much better. I know that when I was in my twenties I did a lot of drinking and was always able to shake ready for the next session. As you get older, their powers of recovery diminish.

For someone who is looking for a couple of years the party and is willing to go in and out, owning a bar in Phuket is a decent choice. If you are lucky enough where you can discipline go to the bar and entertain customers without getting night drunk each, then maybe it's for you. But as a long-term source of income - for most people is simply not worth the sacrifice.

Another friend from the bar owner decided to sell after a couple of years in business. He was a young guy and made life bar. The problem was that it had reached a point where he hated his bar. I hated going to the same place night after night, he was sick and tired of dealing with bargirls and their petty squabbles and was tired of feeling shit all the time.

So I sold it and came out with a nice little profit. It was not until after selling the bar that he discovered the reason why he was trash all the time. It was not just the hangover, but it masks the real problem. He had leukemia.

I'm not saying be a bar owner in fact the cause of his leukemia, but certainly did not help his body deal with it. What they did was put in a state of mind in which thought was normal to feel bad all the time and he accepted. Fortunately, left in time, was diagnosed and returned to their home country where he was treated successfully.

He is now completely clear and hopes that one day he can return to Thailand. For the moment, regular checkups prevent. He says he now looks at his Weather in Phuket and realizes that was routine. He was making enough money to live, but could not save anything. His life revolved around going to the bar every night to keep just do the things that led him to Thailand in the first place. Never again would the activity bar in Patong.

So to recap. If you are thinking to become a bar owner in Patong, what do you expect? Well you will spend most nights sitting at the bar waiting for customers and listening to terrible loud music. You will have to fight for a worthwhile benefit. You have to deal with the antics of the girls in her bar. You can choose to spend their evenings and be sober and bored or drunk and happy.

Assuming you go for the option drunk and happy (most bar owners do) is likely to pay for it. I do not own a single bar that looks like a picture of health. It's a demanding life and if you do long term is probably taking a few years off their life expectancy.

You could take the attitude that work is always shit. It is garbage in my home country for what may be trash work Phuket. Well fair enough, if you enter the bar business with his eyes open and not a rosy vision of days on the beach and party nights.
