Management of the Business Cycle: Can not stop pedaling

Isaac Newton taught us that what goes up must come down. So, why companies differ? Business cycle management is one of the biggest challenges that entrepreneurs and management team will face advanced. And the reality is that will never disappear.

In today's global economy, the impact of any macroeconomic event travels at the speed of light. The Federal Reserve sneezing, and children, the rest of the world catches a cold in no time. Blood pressure levels of many CEO mirror the changing pattern of oil prices and indexes. This is where the skill in managing the economic cycle makes the difference between success and destruction, and separates men boys. "Beating the Business Cycle" by Lakshman Achuthan and Anirvan Banerji are listed in the Professional and Technical Section of the books offers more knowledge.

For an entrepreneur, it is very important to learn this lesson from the outset, lest he or she is forced to learn the hard way. We will discuss some of the common tactics used by teachers in the art of managing the business cycle.

The first thing to do is anticipate. More of a conglomerate has been caught off guard by an "unexpected" recession. Of course, macroeconomic developments in distant continents may seem irrelevant, even scratching the surface. Companies are very intertwined these days, and therefore negative spread far and wide, quickly. If you do not have an advanced degree in Economics, leave the number crunching to someone who does. Make sure your business forecasting techniques, taking into account the new circumstances.

Manage the economic cycle invariably starts with realigning the cost of capital. After waiting a slowdown, the most conservative business leaders could cut new capital investment. Moreover, proactive thinkers actually increase capital spending before the recession, in order to obtain an advantage to be first when the economy recovers. Of course, this depends on the business you are in - for example, this tactic is favored by real estate companies. Similarly, the decision to buy or sell a company also must be timed accordingly. The temptation to buy is strong in good times, but has a price. At the micro level also have to manage cash flow differently.

To stock or not? Inventory management is hard enough as it is, but it's close to the complexity of the science of rockets near a recession. Not reduce production in anticipation of a recession, so loaded with stagnant inventory is a Cardinal sin ... but it is also to be caught unawares by the growing demand in times of economic recovery and have no product to sell! Particularly in the case of companies that manufacture products in season, or even those with a high degree of obsolescence, the decision is to take stock of achievements or failures.

Do not cut advertising. No, that's not a typo, we mean what we said. The reactive way of managing the business cycle is to freeze promotional activity. Tell yourself repeatedly that advertising is an investment rather than expenses until you start to believe it. Advertisement low demand during a slack season, and fees to make - which means, you get greater visibility at a lower price.

Re-evaluate their human resource needs - Why does not necessarily mean reduce its size. Its staff of employees and may fluctuate according to the economic cycle. However, I remember that during the off season, the workforce is in streak If you have been struggling to find the right people, can be a good time to redouble their efforts during a recession. Not only can you find a wider selection of candidates, you can probably hire them at lower cost.

While macroeconomic events have a far-reaching impact, can also bring unexpected opportunities. Managing the business cycle is no easy task and yet, there is almost nothing that is more critical.
