Adjust your bike riding in spring

For those of us who put our bikes for the winter, it's time to take away the dust and get ready to travel. When bringing a bike storage, a mini set-up is necessary. Pay special attention to the following four areas: chain, the components derailleur, brakes and wheels.

If you have been using an oil based lubricant, consider switching to a wax-based product. The only advantage of an oil-based lubricant is to be applied less frequently, but in all others, wax-based is superior. For instance, oil collects dust trails and other things abrasive to the chain, whereas wax sheds abrasives. A lubricant is recommended wax-based White Lightning.

If you have been using lubricant oil-based chain, if you want to switch to wax or not, you must remove the chain and clean with a degreasing solvent before adding fresh lubricant. According to its terms typical use, using a solvent to degrease the chain needs to be done once a year at least.

Lubricate pivot points using a good oil-based lubrication. I use Tri-Flow. Next, lubricate and adjust the derailleur cables, which could be stretched during winter. Adjust so that the change is clear.

~ ~ ~ ~ Brakes
Again, lubricate the cables. Use either oil or oil-based lubricants waxes based on how dust will be expected to mount typical conditions. Adjust the cables, which could be stretched during the winter.

Check pills: is there a lot of rubber, making the pads hit the rims evenly? If you use disc brakes actuated by a fluid, check the fluid level brake in the tank.

Wheels ~ ~ ~ ~
Turn the wheel slowly checking truth. The wheel should not wobble at all. If it wobbles a bit and you have the tools and skills, can make small adjustments using a spoke wrench. But if there is substantial wobbling, take the wheel to a shop and have a true professional the wheel.

Check tire pressure, which is bound to be low after a winter of storage. Inflate to the manufacturers recommendations that are marked on the tire.

Now give the bike again. Is the seat adjustment still a good fit? Is there excess play or tightness in the wheel bearings, crank, pedals, and headset? In addition, for full suspension bikes, check the suspension joints.
