Wildwood - a Jersey Shore popular family destination with a doo-wop heritage
The Wildwoods are a popular New Jersey family beach resort with its free, comprehensive, white powder sand beaches and a world-class promenade with amusement piers, restaurants, food stands and salt water taffy shops, now attracts visitors with an interest in Doo Wop.
Doo - Wop Heritage
The first few days of vacation in this city of architecture were wooden housing three hotels and four-story Victorian. With the start of the Doo-Wop era, taken from the definition of the music industry in the period 1948-61, the working class were experiencing increase in leisure time, wealth, and new cars are now known as Doo-Wop classic cars. These families from the areas of Philadelphia and New York found this destination beach accessible, fun and a great place to take children on holiday.
This demand stimulated the development of motel lodging in the city which has since been known as "Doo Wop Architecture". The beach side motels are both accessible and convenient, attractive for tourists from working class families. You can drive and park your car right next to his room and had his luggage cart through the aisles or worry about the kids making noise, or monitoring their feet inside the arena.
"Doo Wop Architecture" is a term coined by the MAC (the Atlantic Center of Art) in early 1990 describe the unique, space-age architectural style that was common in the 1950s and 1960s. It is characterized by modern, sweeping angles, colors bright flashes, boomerang shapes, plastic palm trees, angled wall and roof styles.
With its many clubs, this target was natural Jersey Shore to attract many of the greatest of the era "Doo-Wop" music stars, and became a reinforcement of Wildwood as a classic "Doo-Wop" destination.
While The Wildwoods can boast the highest concentration of the 1950s and 1960s motels in the world, are now losing ground to the real estate market pressures to convert to condos. The rapid increase in land value and the prohibitive cost of updating your old motels are the owners of weight motels to sell to condo developers make lucrative offers to purchase.
In the mid-90s, business leaders realized I needed a way to pump new life into the tourism community. They called the consultants who saw the uniqueness in the 50 motels. While most of the motels are open and in need of repair, which barely survive on the family summer vacation. Learning from Miami Beach who took the preservation of its 1930 art deco buildings and neighboring Cape May who took advantage of the revitalization of its late 19th century Victorian architecture, it was recognized that heritage tourism is growing in popularity and is directly related to the uniqueness of a destination.
The Doo Wop Preservation League in Wildwood was formed and currently is actively trying to preserve that classic Doo Wop "feel" will become a memory. You are determined to protect its uniqueness, pressing for national heritage list and hoping for funds to help restore many of the buildings.
The determination to preserve its "Doo Wop" heritage is symbolized by the convention center that welcomes visitors with a roof angle boardwalk, gateway curve and neon signs. Across the street, a new museum Doo Wop, with period furniture, neon and street signs in the 1950s, set to open in time for the summer of 2007.
The museum is located in the historic building in Surfside Restaurant swirl that is being rebuilt on this site using the original steel structure and other devices that were put in storage when the Surfside was taken down from its original site in 2002. It will also include a "neon sign garden" with some of the best motel and restaurant signs that others have been rescued from demolished motels.
