Preparing for Holy Week in Mexico
Planning for Holy Week starts with months of anticipation and festivities including passion plays, fervent processions and altar displays taking place across the country.
Since the mass conversion of indigenous peoples to Catholicism in the 16th century, Semana Santa (Easter) - a reverent observance of the last days of Jesus, and Easter - a celebration of the resurrection - have become the most important religious holidays of Mexico next to Christmas. As with most Mexican celebrations, Semana Santa combines the country's strong Spanish heritage with elements of its prehispanic past. For generations, pilgrims and tourists have traveled to Mexico to witness the party yet reverent Semana Santa.
The feasts usually begin Palm Sunday, which commemorates the day Jesus arrived in Jerusalem before his crucifixion. As the biblical passage goes, palm branches and clothing were distributed in his way, and today, representations often include these elements. Holy Thursday commemorates the day of the Last Supper, marked by nationwide visits to seven temples, designated churches in each town or city. Good Friday commemorates the day Jesus was crucified on the cross, with most Christians fasting on this day and representations of the crucifixion to take place throughout the country. Easter Sunday is a day of celebration, commemorating the day of the resurrection of Jesus, with music, dance and cultural activities.
In addition to special mass ceremonies, an important and ubiquitous element of Semana Santa is a representation of the Passion a dramatic representation of the crucifixion of Jesus. The representation of the Passion was brought to Mexico by Christian missionaries from Europe at a time in this and other religious works are a vital element of European culture generally. The work not only survived in Mexico but was incorporated in the dramatic rituals premises and an innate part of local culture. In Mexico, the Aztecs bright colors are noticeable throughout, and ancient dances are often performed alongside Christian rituals.
Most of the celebrations involve solemn processions, plays or representations of biblical scenes, others incorporate unusual elements in their parties Judas as prehispanic dances and explosion. Thousands travel to popular destinations to enjoy the outdoors and take part in the festivities.
Creel, Chihuahua: The region mountainous indigenous community of Creel in northern Mexico, is a popular destination for Easter. In addition to enjoying the many ecotourism activities the Sierra Madre Occidental, the Tarahumara Indians, one of the few indigenous groups in the country, are painted white for Holy Week and host a special series of celebrations including dance and music that dates back centuries, merger prehispanic tradition with Catholicism.
San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato: The colonial city of San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico comes alive during Holy Week. For Palm Sunday, the city overflows with visitors and indigenous women selling flowers, palm crosses and religious articles outside the parish with the Gothic cathedral bearing tall towers as the focal point of the city.

Children dressed in biblical costumes and men dressed as Roman centurions ride horseback through the winding cobbled streets, while life-size statues of the Virgin Mary, the Apostles, Mary Magdalene and John the Baptist are carried through the city.
Taxco, Guerrero: The mining town of Taxco silver picturesque is also a popular destination for Easter, given its proximity to the city Mexico. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of many processions which begin in nearby villages. In commemoration of the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, an image of Jesus mounted on the back of a donkey. As the donkey journeys to Taxco, palm fronds and flowers are set on the floor.
On the night of Holy Thursday, penitents carrying candles walk in procession to the baroque church of Santa Prisca. A recreation of the Last Supper is made. The play Resurrection, which took place at about nine o'clock Saturday is an impressive site to behold. A final and joyful procession takes place on Easter Sunday.
San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosi: The colonial city of San Luis Potosi, located 257 miles north of Mexico City, will hold its fifty-second Procession of Silence this year, one the most important Catholic manifestations in the country. With the participation of over 2,000 Potosinos, the solemn procession begins at the Templo de Santo Domingo eight pm on Friday and will make its way through the historic downtown area.
Similar to the ceremony in Seville, Spain, penitents don hoods walking in silence through the streets, carrying torches and holy images. During Holy Week, San Luis Potosi has more than 90 events, including concerts, a national food festival, and a tennis tournament, now in its fifty years.
Iztapalapa, Mexico City: Few would say that a small town south of downtown Mexico City would be in the international spotlight during Semana Santa. More than a million people gather each year Ixtapalapa to witness an entire town become a great stage to present a passion play that has been reenacted every year since 150 years ago. Months before the Week Easter, the town comes alive with preparations for the biggest event of the year, the incorporation of each community member. While there is a part for everyone, the actors are carefully chosen, with the most important pieces, like Jesus and the Virgin Mary is the greatest honor. The actor who plays Jesus in particular, must meet certain requirements such as height, weight and physical condition. The part is so demanding physically and emotionally challenging, because recreation requires the actor to carry a 200 pound cross through the city, after receiving an actual whipping.
State of Michoacán: From Palm Sunday, performances that represent passages Bible take place statewide. In San Lorenzo, a small town in the Purépecha region, about 200 kilometers west of Mexico City, holding has a special touch with young people carrying palm leaves six feet to the church.
Holy Wednesday in the city involves a procession Tlalpujahua in which huge images of Jesus Christ from the XVI and XVIII catch the eyes of the spectators. Good Friday in Patzcuaro and Morelia include silent processions for the arrest, trial, crucifixion, death and burial of Jesus Christ. Easter Sunday, the day of the resurrection of Jesus, is the last day of celebration. On Tarímbaro, kid's carnival (Carnival small) takes place during which people dance in the streets while Judas figures explode like fireworks.
