Chihuahuas use in police work: Seriously
You might wonder how a tiny Chihuahua can be used in police work, because when think of police dogs, photos of German thought Shepherds and other breeds big, powerful dog that can easily lead to a criminal. These dogs are official loyal and not afraid to offer his life in the line of duty. Or we can think of hounds or other dogs used by police officers for their skills with strong odor. These dogs are trained to find drugs or find important clues to the crime scene. Now it seems that the profile of the police dogs and a Chihuahua is changing, with a rat terrier mix is being used regularly.
Over the past seven years, Brutus, a canine Shepherd has been working for the state of Ohio, sherriffs in the department of Geauga County. The county has always been fond of using German Shepherds and laboratories in fulfilling their duty. There is a new dog in use, Midge a Chihuahua / Rat Terrier mix. Midge is nine months old and weighs only seven pounds, yet she has the heart of a police dog. Nowadays cruises out of jail with a uniform bit and maintains order.
Mosquito is a cute little dog, she is super nice and attentive and aware of everything that happens in and around prison.
A dog trainer for the department of Geauga County think they have a great future ahead of her as a drug dog. Midge is began with the police when he was only three months old, and she initiated the formation of drug about six months later. Currently, she is being trained to sniff out marijuana, but has not yet been certified. However, the department is on track coach, while watching their counterparts largest marijuana smell in the cabinets, crawl spaces, vents and other hiding places.
When not being trained, loves to romp Midge with Brutus, his counterpart Pastor.
Sheriff Dan McClelland has thought about the possibility of using a smaller dog to detect drugs for about two years. The idea came when he saw how hard it was for the large German Shepherds, when trying to maneuver in small spaces. He saw how difficult it was 120 pounds for a dog when they were in a car and had to turn around. This also resulted in larger dogs damage cars and homes of the suspects and then suspects to turn around and sue the police department for the recovery of damages.
Sheriff McClellands idea on the use of a small dog was reinforced when he saw U.S. Customs officials using beagles to check luggage for drugs.
McClelland said there is no reason for a dog not can be used as effectively as a large dog. Midge larger rooms can look just like a big dog and has the added advantage of being able to go to smaller places sniffing around.
McClelland has no doubt in his mind that the use of Midge police work is not something that will fall into disgrace and smaller dogs have proved a valuable asset to law enforcement.
