Crinoline

Crinoline was originally a stiff fabric with a pattern of horsehair and a warp of cotton or linen thread. The fabric first appeared around 1830, but in 1850 the word had come to mean a stiff petticoat or rigid skirt-shaped steel designed to support the skirts of a dress woman in the required form. In form and function is very similar to the previous guardainfante.

An alternative source for the word is sometimes given: the combination of the French words crin (specifically meaning horse-hair) and Lin (from Again, that is, linen).

The crinoline was not the first accessory designed to support the user in the foothills of the right way, the executioner in its various forms have been used for the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, and panniers in the eighteenth century the century. However, these very formal and elaborate styles were only used in the royal courts and at the highest levels of society.

After the French Revolution, French fashion turned against the elaborate styles favored by royalty, the court and aristocracy. As Parisian fashion was very influential, most western European countries adopted the same styles.

Under the prevailing neoclassical influence, women's fashion has taken a simple style based on single items covered in ancient Greece and the togas of ancient Rome. Skirts were straight and thin, and is used with very few - if any - petticoats.

However, the silhouette did not remain so for some time, and skirt hems began to widen to give a cone shape. In the 1810s, began to be sectioned used in the foot again, and skirts widened in the 1820s. The width of these skirts was sometimes supported by a small uproar. These were not always sufficient, and so extra petticoats were worn to help.

The crinoline 'first' were petticoats starched for extra stiffness, or made of crinoline fabric new, and often had to fly to support the skirts to the desired width. However, dress fabrics were heavy but not stiff enough to support its own weight, which tends to collapse the slopes out of shape. Extra rigidity has been added through the foothills of the rope rings or braid running around the edge. In the 1830s, the women began to wear skirts with hoops of whalebone or cane around the hem.

The hoop skirt for the first time in U.S. 1846 is the number of 4584 patent of David Hough, Jr. In 1858, the number IRJ Mann 20 681 U.S. patents was the first lattice of ropes and hoops.

In 1858, the American was Thomson greatly facilitated the development of cage crinoline by developing a ring holder, to connect the steel crinoline hoops tapes down a vertical band around the waist of the user. The invention was patented in the U.S. (patent US21581), France (patent FR41193) and Britain (patent GB1204/1859). This facilitated the fashionable silhouette of the development of a cone shape with a dome. It was not a totally original idea, Thompson was probably inspired by the open or cage style under hoop skirts and panniers.

The cage crinoline was adopted with enthusiasm: the numerous slopes, including rigid or panniers, were heavy, bulky and uncomfortable in general. It was light - that only requires one or two petticoats worn over the top to prevent the steel bands that appear as ridges in the skirt - and freed the user's legs from tangling petticoats.

Unlike the executioner and panniers, the crinoline was worn by women of all social classes. Wider circulation magazines and newspapers spread news of the new fashion, also fueling the desire of her, and mass production made affordable.

The crinoline was the subject of mockery and satire, particularly in Punch magazine. Dress reformers did not like either - took on the appearance of the cage crinoline and claimed that in fact women prisoners. Given that the crinoline is come to have a maximum diameter of 180 centimeters (six feet), one can imagine the difficulties to get through doors, inside and outside the cars, and general problems of moving in such a large structure. However, while the crinoline must have a degree of stiffness, also had a degree of flexibility. A particular type of steel, known as spring steel or spring steel watch, allowed the rings to be temporarily pressed out of shape.

The second problem was the potential impropriety of the crinoline. Its lightness was a curse as a blessing, like a gust of wind or a coup could set it swinging and reveal the wearer's legs. Even worse, if bumped or overturned, the crinoline would keep up their skirts.

The third problem was the pressure, but hard to spread the pressure tight corset.

Sitting may be a problem if the user has not expanded its practice skirts well as the entire hoop contraption would fly up in the face. This trend is embarrassing, but often humorous comedies represented at the time.

The largest the problem with the crinoline, however, was that in some situations it was dangerous - because of its size, the user often have no idea where his edges. Only drawback and annoying when a maid crinoline knocked a vase on a table or a cup upset, but for factory girls, there was a risk of being trapped in crinolines machinery and dragging them to be maimed or crushed to death [citation needed]. Crinolines also burned easily, partly because air circulated freely underneath of them and partly because the fashionable dress fabrics, silk and cotton, were highly flammable.

The crinoline had grown to the maximum dimensions for 1860. However, as the fashionable silhouette never remains the same for long, the huge skirts began to fall from grace. Around 1864, the shape of the crinoline began to change. Rather than being dome-shaped, the front and the sides began to contract, leaving only the volume in the rear. The kind of crinoline that supported this style was known sometimes as a crinolette. The structure of the cage still attached to the waist and extended to the ground, but covered only the back of the wearer's legs. Himself crinolette was quickly superseded by the bustle, which was sufficient to support and train the cloths in the back of the skirt.

Crinolines are still used today. They are usually part of a formal organization, like an evening gown or a wedding dress. The volume of the skirt is not as great as during the Victorian era so modern crinolines are most often constructed of several layers of stiff net, with flounces to extend the skirt. If there is a hoop crinoline, is likely to be plastic or nylon, which are inexpensive, lightweight and flexible.

With the recent trend to luxury weddings and wedding gowns of grandeur, the crinoline has begun to make a comeback. For his first solo collection, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood crinoline looked to for inspiration. The collection, entitled Mini Crini, is more short crinoline skirts with more flexible plastic rings.
