From Lincoln Logs to Legos, toys that inspire children to build long time favorites. Few brands have a tradition long and rich history as Meccano toys. Many of the current blockade, and building sets can trace their ancestry at a time, drawing directly on Meccano. Some brands popular areas such as joint Tec Steel Erector and are little more than copies of the concept Meccano.
Meccano began as a construction toy set called Mechanical easily, all the way in 1901. The inventor was Frank Hornby of Liverpool, England. His desire was to create and sell a toy that was fun and educational too. He designed the product as a kit for building models that were based on the principles of mechanical engineering. The first sets of content items made metal strips, plates, beams, and the nuts and bolts to hold everything together. The models need only a screwdriver and keys to various companies for construction. We also included the wheels, axles, pulleys and gears to add motion to the models. Later sets include various types of motors as well. Often established contain instructions for specific models can be built with the included pieces. Many children and adults alike out even more enjoyment to invent their own models and make their own unique creations with the parties.
There are conflicting stories of just how the toy sets is known as Meccano. Some believe it was derived from a combination of the words "make" and "know." The brand name was first recorded by Hornsby in 1907 and following year he Meccano LTD. Hornsby Initially used by other manufacturers to supply parts for the kits. As sales grew in popularity and soon encountered difficulties keep up with demand. Hornsby created his own factory to manufacture parts in Duke Street in his hometown of Liverpool. A second plant more later built large Binns Road. This place served as company headquarters for the next six decades. The construction set soon became a worldwide phenomenon and the plants were opened in France, Argentina and Spain.
Many changes came over the decades. The colors were added to the parties. First blue green and red, then yellow and black, yellow and finally dark. The quality of the pieces became more consistent as the manufacturing processes evolved over time. Sets counted and letters and many of the principles are prized collectors' items today. The production of the toys had to be stopped several times in recent years, especially during the First World War and due to the scarcity of metal World War II. The factories were converted also to material war during the Second World War.
1960 saw the Lines Bros. bought Meccano LTD. By 1970 the electronic parts were added to some sets. The the brand changed hands again when General Mills bought in 1981. Meccano now belongs to a French company that continues the long tradition of building games.
