Genghis Kahn Mongolian hordes and control their own destiny
A Renaissance Faire Mongolia
I was with a couple of friends. Us we were out exploring the area around Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia. Later, along the road, which seems to be some kind of festival going on, so rolled over to check.
There was an improvised platform, a covered dining area and a shop of the structures that few people were selling food and beverages. There was even a few booths with crafts for sale and demonstrations of various kinds. We met with the Mongolian equivalent of a Renaissance Fair!
The Mongol hordes of Genghis Khan
People started to gather in the grandstand so wandered over to see what happened. In the distance we could see dust clouds drift low over the hills ... and then the nearest hill crest reached hundreds of the Mongols on horseback wearing the costumes of the ancient warriors of Genghis Khan! The use of iron and leather helmets, brandishing swords, spears and bows and arrows, with flags flying in the wind, the Mongol hordes were truly at the gates!
Transported in time
It was an impressive sight. It was as if we had been transported back in time. Two armies had gathered several hundred meters on each side of the rostrum. In the distance we could see a huge catapult and marked with banners Yurt Battle of the Mongol emperor. Several people at the distance that shows the extraordinary skills of horsemanship, bowing and plucking their spears and other objects from the ground, maintaining a gallop.
An ancient battle to Combat Model
Over time two armies advancing toward each other and coalesced into a simulated combat. The show, a recreation of an ancient battle, was a birthday celebration the father of Mongolia, Genghis Khan.
It was fascinating to watch. Individuals are matched to each other slashing with swords, stabbing with their spears and lances. Vi as two fighters stood with swords, while a third rider, taking a spear and, undetected, came up behind him and pretended to skewer one of the warriors battle.
As twisted and prancing horses under their riders with their helmets raised clouds of dust, and gradually the whole scene of the battle began to disappear in a brown cloud. "This must have been the way they really looked, I thought to myself.
Flash Cards, fumbled and lost images
Being photographers, we were all too busy shooting. He had an eight-gigabyte card in my camera and near half of the fight that had filled it up. Not wanting to miss a second of the action, I frantically pulled out a fresh card from my pocket, pulled out Full card, sought again in the camera, formatted and returned to the shooting.
It was not until I was back in my hotel room that night I realized that somehow, in all the excitement, I had put the original card back into the camera and the format ... to lose half of my photos! Aarrgh! It still hurts thinking about it.
The importance of having a system
That little episode really impressed me the importance of having a system to help keep track of all cards and empty. Of course, it was not the first time he had been "very impressed" with that kind of thing.
Once, on a boat sailing down the river Iriwaddy in Burma, I pulled Chinese fishing nets at sunset, when in fact ... That's another story for another time. Say you have a system to deal with flash cards and stick to it, can be a very important part of the process of photography!
Take control of your own destiny
But there is another, I think the most important aspects of this story. Some days ago I received a message from my website (my real email address is not visible to prevent spam "harvesting"). It was from the art director a French magazine. Want to use some of the photos of Genghis Khan re-enactment. I asked him if he had sought Corbis because the images are online with them.
He replied that Corbis did not work very well in France and could not see the thumbnails. WTH (what the hell)? Well, whatever the explanation, the fact is that my website has been important to get revenue from images I took for a broker.
My website allows me to have some degree of control and complement the scope of the agency and agency to get my images are not the world. Take control of your own destiny will continue to grow in importance as the world of photography plunges ahead into the unknown territory of the future.
