Austin runs the red carpet of the Red Line

In the fall of 2008, six new rail cars in Switzerland, will be built in Austin moving up and down the Red Line in the state of the art comfort. Zero Emissions, diesel-electric vehicles carry up to 200 passengers each with access for wheelchairs, bike racks, high back seats with pull-down trays and Luggage storage overhead. Trains slick looking red and silver overcome both European safety standards and the U.S., are quieter than buses and can be stopped on a dime. The cars also are equipped with free wireless access for travelers who can not stop checking your email. "Go wireless" has been available in Austin express buses since 2006.
The route will have nine stops and take less than an hour to travel from one end to another. When you start the service, trains will run every half hour during peak hours on weekdays. The proposed nine stops along the center line of the city are the Convention Center, Plaza Saltillo, Martin Luther King Jr., Highland Mall, Crestview, Burnet, North MoPac, Lakeline and Leander.
Select the stations include park and ride (Leander, Lakeline and MoPac) while others will cater for cyclists and pedestrians. All stations are connected by an improved bus service. The current plan Capital also includes new MetroRapid buses to get passengers to their destinations 15 to 20% faster than regular buses. Buses talk signals traffic to have priority at intersections and stops include signs that show the exact time the next bus will arrive.
Station designs were approved last month with some stations with canopies glass works of art in glass. The long-term plan for the stations surrounding neighborhoods that welcome. Following best practices in transit-oriented development (TOD), the city plans to increase housing density around all stations produce proposals and people can walk neighborhoods in these areas.
The estimated cost of project is 90 million MetroRail which is relatively cheap for something that will bring both growth and prosperity to the city. Riding on the work of our ancestors, the red line used 32 miles of existing freight tracks that have been in use for over 100 years.
SPEEDING IN THE FUTURE
Austin's population will double in the next 20 years and planners City are preparing. Capital MetroRail Red Line is only one part of a larger long-term vision to keep the city in motion. Notwithstanding any extension the new light rail system must be approved by referendum, plans are underway and include a plan for interregional passenger rail service between San Antonio, Austin, Georgetown, Round Rock and San Marcos of goods through the use of MoPac tracks.
Rails and Trails is another promising project waiting the extension of the class of the city of the global urban route by building walking and biking for several rail corridors.
