Often described as a coming of age film, the story of four children who take a journey through forest near their homes to find the body of a dead child. The story is told by the character Gordon Lachance, a writer in the making.
Vern, one of the boys, older brother heard her talk of the missing child, whose body is supposed to be in the forest. The boys decide to undertake the journey to find the boy's body. The trip takes two days because the kids lie to their parents, telling them to stay in homes of each other.
The boys experience many difficulties in Along the way, revealing the past and present struggles of the characters. Chris Chambers, played by River Phoenix, is from a family of criminals and alcoholics. Chris is stereotyped by his family. However, he proves to be intelligent and have a desire to break the stereotype. Teddy Duchamp, played by Corey Feldman, has a physical deformity after of his father mentally unstable, he embraced his ear to a stove. Teddy now has to use a headset. Vern Tessio, played by Jerry O'Connell, is overweight and shy. He is easily frightened and often teased. Gordon Lachance, played by Will Wheaton, is the narrator and thus the primary character of the story. Gordie is a boy quiet, with a passion for books and stories. He is rejected by his family after the death of his older brother, football star. The end of history shows that Gordie has become a writer and have been witness to history while I was writing.
The film has a recurring theme of fighting. These occur between two or more characters in the film. The first is brief confrontation between Chris and Ace on the sidewalk when Ace threatens to burn Chris's face as he has for neck. Chris "gives" and Ace releases him. The next is when Teddy faces a train to get to the start of the walk of children. He says he wants to take radical measures "Train dodge," and just before it hits him, Chris takes him and forces him out of harms way. The third clash between what happens is Teddy, once again Junk Yard and the man and his dog. They shout and call names, but when the junk yard man brings Teddy's unstable father into the picture, Teddy breaks down and begins to mourn. Other Ace conflict occurs when some local stops that seem to have a history of racing cars with him. Remain side by side for a short period before a truck appears in the other lane coming toward Ace. Ace and two of his friends (who seem petrified) do not change lanes, but decide to stay on the wrong side of the road and face the next truck. The other car in the race seem frightened by them. Before the crash, the truck is diverted off the road, spilling all of its supplies while Ace is going to win the race. The final showdown is between the band and the crowd younger Ace in the body. The two groups trade harsh words before Ace pulls a knife on Chris, but is soon too skittish to use it after Gordie fires a shot into the air with Chris's gun. Then noted in Ace, which chills and scares him, along with his group. These are just some of the major confrontations that occur in the film.
