Diaphragm valves (or membrane valves) consists of a valve body with two or more ports, a diaphragm and a saddle "Or seat upon which the diaphragm closes the valve. The valve is constructed of plastic or steel.
Originally, the diaphragm valve was developed for use in applications that are unsanitary. Later in the design was adapted for use in bio-pharmaceutical industry by using compliant materials that can withstand disinfection and sterilization methods.
There are two main types of diaphragm valves: one set of stamps in a landfill "(chair) and another (sometimes called a "straight path" of the valve) seals over a seat. The main difference is that a saddle valve type has two ports agree among themselves on opposite sides of the valve, while the type of seat has input / output ports at an angle of 90 degrees to one another. Type chair is the most common in process applications and the type of seat is more commonly used as a tank bottom valve but there is also a valve process. While diaphragm valves usually come in the form of two ports, but can also come with three ports and more. When more than three ports are included, usually require more than a diaphragm, however, special dual actuators can handle more ports with a membrane.
Diaphragm valves can be manual or automated. Its application is in general and closing valves in process systems within the food and beverage, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. The older generation of these valves is not adequate to regulate and control the process flows, however new developments in this area have successfully addressed this problem.
In addition to the familiar, two-way diaphragm valve, other types include: three-way valve deadleg zero sterile access port, block and purge valve valbow and bottom of the tank just to name a few.
Actuators
Diaphragm valves can be controlled by different types of actuators. The most common diaphragm valves use pneumatic actuators, in this type of valve, air pressure is applied through a Schrader valve, which raises the diaphragm and opens the valve. This type of valve is extremely fast, and as such is one of the most common valves used in operations where speed valve is a necessity.
Hydraulic Diaphragm valves also exist for high pressure and low speed operations. Some valves diaphragm also controlled manually.
