Memory Lane: The Red Barn
Can you imagine a time when there was fast food chains are relatively few, the coffee was coffee and entrepreneurs were not all on one line to open the bistro next in fashion? I can. I grew up in that time. At that time, dinner time meant row around the table instead of a row around the window unit running, Starbuck still that kind of "Moby Dick" and "Chez" was just a misspelling of the place where the Mets play. However, we were all in the temptation of the forbidden fruit and finally found a way out of Eden. Along the road, a number restaurants came and went. One of them was the Red Barn.
The Red Barn was a rival of Burger King and McDonald's, but also were the first to offer both chicken and fish. The signature burger, the "Big Barney" actually predates the "Big Mac" for a bit, and your burger a quarter of a pound, "Barnbuster" actually appeared before the quarter-pound ", even though it looked a lot like the Whopper." His most used was the slogan: "When the Hungry hit, when The Hungry hit, hit the red barn." The "Hungry" were his three iconic pets. In the 70s, when I was eating those things, the Red Barn was the meeting place of our school on Friday. On Fridays after school sporting events, everyone will meet down the red barn in the 73rd and Federal in Westminster. Interestingly, our cross-town rivals, Ranum, meet a few miles and across the street at McDonald's. Although he had the best food choice, we had the best "winter" choice because McDonald's was one of the old, the golden arches of McDonald's, no seats inside and patio no. Our Red Barn had ample seating inside and everyone could meet there for an aperitif before deciding how to spend the rest of the afternoon on Friday. Many good memories contain a previous meeting Friday night at the Red Barn.
At its height, Red Barn had more than 400 restaurants in 19 states and two foreign countries, but, for whatever reason, they do not. They had a loyal clientele, who had the brochures and were a decent product, but still sailing into oblivion sometime in the late 70s. You can still find remnants of old red barns became somewhat more other restaurants, car dealerships or rental stores, but other than memories and some memories are lost, Red Barn Hamburgers are just a part of the story.

I tried to get some of his photos to post here for your enjoyment, but could not. However, if you are interested at all, all the memories in general are parked there for posterity. As for personal memories, I'll just smile and keep those myself.
