The Sixty Special name has been used in Cadillac denote a special model since the 1938 Bill Mitchell designed Series 60 derivative. Although the model was launched in 1938 Cadillac range of lower price, and soon the Sixty Special name would be synonymous with some of the most luxurious Cadillac vehicles.

By 1938, Bill Mitchell designed Sixty Special was added to lower-priced line of Cadillac vehicles - 60 in the series. The new four-door sedan, designed to resemble a convertible unveiled trendsetters functions including a fully integrated trunk, lack of running boards (all brands soon followed), and four first-hinged doors. It was built on a 127-inch (3.200 mm) wheelbase - 3-inch (76 mm) longer than the standard set of 60 cars.
