Commonly used grades of stainless steel

The stainless steel grades are essentially alloys of iron with more than 10.5% chromium. These degrees can contain additional elements nickel, manganese, carbon, nitrogen and silicon. They can be modified for special purposes by adding molybdenum, titanium, niobium, silicon, sulfur, etc. A wide range of these degrees have been developed based on specific requirements. These are classified into the following categories according their microstructure:

Ferritic stainless steel
Ferritic stainless steel grades are the grades of natural chromium without hardening chromium content ranging from 10.5% to 28% and low carbon content. These are magnetic and show a better resistance to corrosion than grades martensitic. These grades are used in applications where the desired formability, weldability and corrosion resistance is between those of martensitic and austenitic types. The ferrite can be buffed or polished to achieve high gloss.

Martensitic stainless steel
The stainless steel grades martensitic grades are evident containing 11.5% chromium and 18% chromium with relatively high carbon (0.1% - 1.2%). Originally developed for cutlery, such are well suited for applications requiring high strength and resistance to abrasion and erosion. These grades are magnetic and the screen just conformation traits cold. Although these can be hardened by air cooling, cooling oil is sometimes used to ensure uniform hardening. These ratings may beDuplex stainless steel welded but require stress relief after welding. Show their best corrosion resistance in the hardened and a good performance slightly corrosive environments. The martensitic stainless steel grades commonly used for blades, turbine blades, surgical instruments, fasteners, shafts, gears, valves and pins.

Austenitic stainless steel
The austenitic stainless steel grades are characterized by corrosion and oxidation resistance, weldability, ductility and strength compared to ferritic and martensitic stainless steel grades for the same levels of chromium.

The austenitic stainless steel grades exhibit excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion. They actually support the attack of organic acids (eg acetic acid, lactic acid etc., citrus), are resistant to oxidising acids good (eg, nitric acid) and fair resistance to mineral acids (eg sulfuric acid). These grades are well suited for serious training. Some types of work harden to a high degree, while others have been developed to minimize this trend. Work hardening is advantageous in some cases where high strength is required. Stainless austenitic steel grades nonmagnetic in the annealed condition, but depending on the composition, may become slightly magnetic when cold worked. These degrees Stainless steel has good high temperature properties such as creep resistance and resistance to oxidation or reduction. They also show excellent ductility low temperature and impact resistance. The austenitic stainless steel grades can be easily manufactured by bending, drawing, spinning, punching, drilling, machining and welding and can be easily polished finish high. These attributes make it very versatile and popular for various applications in a variety of industries.
There are two major categories of austenitic stainless steel - chromium-nickel (300 series) and chromium-manganese (200 series).

At present, chromium-nickel is the most large stainless steel produced more applications worldwide. typical for this category include food processing, chemical plants, pharmaceutical equipment, hospitals, textiles, architecture, construction, kitchen utensils, consumer durables, etc.

Chromium-manganese stainless steel is the fastest growth of all categories of stainless steel because of its high performance to cost ratio. Applications include cutlery, kitchenware, sinks, automotive upholstery, furniture, architecture, buildings, buses, trains and tubes ornamentals.

Duplex Stainless Steel
The duplex stainless steel grades contain relatively high chromium (between 18% and 28%) and moderate amounts of nickel (1% to 8%). This combination of ferritic structures duplex and austenitic is called. Many of these grades containing molybdenum (1% to 5%) and nitrogen (0.05% to 0.3%). Some grades of duplex stainless steel also containing manganese (up to 5%), copper (up to 2%) and tungsten (up to 2%). These show high degrees of resistance to stress corrosion cracking and ion attack chloride and have a higher yield strength than austenitic or ferritic grades. These properties combined with appropriate design lead to material savings. Added quality fabrication and welding are possible if the operator is well trained. These grades are used in marine, offshore, pulp and paper industry, chemical, petrochemical and desalination plants.
