Umbilical cord blood and stem cells
Much has been said in the news recently about the benefits of preserving cord blood, and need to invest time and money on stem cell research.
Cord blood is blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta after birth. In general, cord blood is routinely discarded with the placenta and umbilical cord research at the time of birth, but now has shown that cord blood is a rich source of stem cells. This is very important that stem cells are the building blocks of the blood and immune system.
It has become clear that saving cord blood in blood banks, could save the life of the donor or family members of diseases in the future. This is possible because stem cells have the capacity to differentiate into other cell types in the body, giving rise to all tissues, organs and body systems. By saving these stem cells, treatments can be developed for diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and diabetes - to name a few.
Cells mother's umbilical cord blood are genetically unique child for the baby and her biological family. As a valuable biological resource, researchers can using stem cells to investigate the potential for future applications, if the child or family develop health problems later in life. This has led to current tendency of many parents to invest in their own health insurance "through the storage of stem cells kept at birth on the banks of umbilical cord blood.
The process of storing cord blood, is to establish umbilical cord blood using the method of collection bag or syringe after umbilical cord has been clamped and cut. The blood is then tested to determine whether it meets eligibility standards. Red blood cells or plasma are removed and not be required in the transplant. The blood is stored in the unit of umbilical cord blood - Whether in a plastic bag or vinyl that is frozen in liquid nitrogen.
There are two types of cord blood banks ...
First, are the family banks, which store the umbilical cord for use the family.
Secondly, donors are public banks that store blood for unrelated use or unfamiliar - this can be used to research and development of cures for many types of health problems.
Each parent has the option of saving umbilical cord blood of their baby for family use, however, only a small number of people are eligible to donate blood from your baby's umbilical cord stem cells.
There are three sources of stem cells in the body.
1 - bone marrow cells.
2 - peripheral blood cells (this is the blood circulating through the body).
3 - Cells from umbilical cord blood.
The umbilical cord is significant for research because differs from other types of stem cells. Due to the structure of the stem cells of umbilical cord blood, which are less likely to be rejected by the body when used in a transplant. This allows the use of blood in patients other than the original donor, and results in a higher rate of success.
