Gm Closing Suv Plant Ahead of Schedule
General Motors has decided to pull the plug on its Moraine Assembly plant ahead of schedule, the closure of the factory that builds the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and related models with just two days before Christmas. Although the movement had been rumored for weeks, was not something that GM had said originally would happen until 2010. But with the economy plummeting and consumers making the shift to smaller SUVs and vehicles, the closure of this plant years has been secured.
Only last September, GM suspended the second round for the plant, a move that laid off 1,000 workers. With the closure of plants In December, another 1,400 workers at GM are seeking employment or early retirement.

When the SUVs debuted earlier this decade, GM had expected the vehicles to play an important role in helping the dealer to the bank its position as one of the largest builders of passenger trucks in the world. The Chevrolet TrailBlazer was accompanied by the GMC Envoy, Oldsmobile Bravada and Buick later Ranier as the four vehicles sharing the same platform, although the Oldsmobile and Buick versions have since been withdrawn. Later, the Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7X was developed from this same platform, giving GM and its affiliates up to six models of distribution of most of the same components.

When the TrailBlazer and its siblings were submitted for the 2002 model year, GM also produced an extended version of each model allowing third place allowed to add, a measure of passenger capacity is expanded from five to seven passengers. In 2006, the model was discarded wider GM decided to concentrate on its new line of crossover vehicles including the GMC Acadia. Like the SUV, the new crossover will be sold through four product lines and, unlike SUVs, are based on a car platform instead of a flatbed truck, a move that makes these vehicles easier to handle, offers a smoother ride, and provide better fuel economy.
What lies ahead
Retreating Gas prices could fuel demand for new crossovers from GM, but the sour economy could put pressure on GM to hold prices down despite increased funding and raw material prices. GM had been watching the development of a new line of mid-size SUV, but the plans are apparently on hold as the company retools its line to sell smaller cars and trucks to keep pace with shifting consumer demand.
In total, the closure of the Moraine plant is a disappointment to many, perhaps most of it as it coincides with the Christmas holidays.
