Why Team Building Weekends Fail (and how to make yours succeed)
Somewhere in the world this afternoon, a group of office colleagues teams are tied up and preparing to scale the wall of a cliff together. In another town, another group of friends are involved in a shelter designed to promote their sense of teamwork. Late at night in another town, six men who usually compete in the office are cooperating in building a robot. What is what all have in common?
The phrase is the formation of teams, and has come to represent a way of doing business that takes into account the strengths and weaknesses each member of a workgroup. The basic concept of weekends working as a team is bringing a group of colleagues together and, when subjected to various difficulties, events and activities, they cement a team that supports each other and work together toward a common goal.
The only problem with this scenario is that too often It does not work. Once the group is back in the office, which fall back into old ways of work and the weekend of team building is nothing but a pleasant memory. The problem is not with the concept of team building, but the idea that it can be done in a weekend, no matter what that implies the weekend. Not that the purpose week of team building are a bad idea - is that they are expected to do a job that should take place in his office every working day of the year. The purpose a team building event should be to establish, reinforce and reward, not single-handedly forge a group of colleagues in a team. If used to replace the work your company (or you, as administrator) should be doing every day, then you're missing out on some important points - and drag the main benefits all out of office for a weekend of exhilirating and challenging activities.
So how to forge the bonds of a team if not immersed in the crucible of a weekend of team building? In simple terms the street, one can not lead by example - have to walk the walk. If you want your staff to believe that we are a team and function as a team, then they should be treated as a team - and yourself as an important member of it.
- Communication is the key to building a team.
o-The biggest mistake that the only "management" highlights the lack of communication. Your company need not be an open book to all employees, but sharing goals and intentions give employees a sense of being part of a large team working towards a specific purpose.
- Building teamwork in the workflow.
o-In order to work in teams, people need to be treated as such. To begin the project with a team from the conference to define and refine goals. Create a lounge area "central", where team members are comfortable grab coffee in the morning - and taking a moment to be up to date with things. Hold regular team meetings where team members can speak of progress and delays so that nobody feels left out of the loop.
- Make recognition of the achievements of priority.
o-recognition of the achievement is important to strengthen the team spirit. It need not be formal - in fact, informal recognition and unexpected can be very powerful. A word in passing in the hallway, take a moment to pass on praise from a client over a cup of coffee, a 'casual in this great work proposal, the boys "at the end of a meeting are part of a team framework.
- Make time to play as a team, too.
or, if the work is a football team, a bowling league or a semi-annual weekend where team members can really stretch their wings, teams work best when they have something in common besides their jobs. A hike through a mountain of snow accumulates shared memories that help cement the bonds that have formed throughout the year.
