What is the BMHR and why do we need?
Birmingham Half Head Resection prosthesis and applied use in patients with avascular necrosis.
For patients with osteonecrosis with a larger volume of the femoral head, a short-stemmed uncemented prosthesis, the Birmingham Mid Head Resection, BMHR (MMT Ltd, Birmingham, UK, now Smith and Nephew Orthopaedics Ltd, Bromsgrove, UK) was developed.

The indications for resection prosthesis Head Average rating: -
- Developmental dysplasia of the segment shortened femoral head-neck
- Large avascular necrosis of the femoral head
- Cysts large femoral head
- Through Epiphyseolyses anomalies and Morbus Perthes (femoral head necrosis in children)
- Reduction bone substance due to osteoarthritis
- Marked bone involution through inactivity, but with potential for regression ..
In cases of advanced osteoarthritis, a femoral head defect occurs which prevents the reliable anchor component of rejuvenation. The titanium stem grows in the healthy femoral head and neck, and a secure base for the component of the head.
Resurfacing is only advisable when the stability of bone and femoral head shape provide sufficient support for the prosthesis. With healthy and active patients who do not meet these requirements, but eligible for a preservation process of the bones, half head resection can be an alternative to a standard prosthesis .....
