AC / DC? BLACK ICE (SONY)

While it has been eight years since Stiff Upper Lip, anticipation is not was massive for a new AC / DC album. When the news came that there was one on the way, the public response was more along the lines of, "What Really? Cool. This is partly because you can hear your favorite AC / DC songs almost every day on the radio, and partly because the best band in Australia (with Radio Birdman comes in a close second) do not really do much to court the masses. He put on a disk from time to time, to tour in support of it, then go to fans about their business and hope to do the same.

I'm getting direction, however. These are the important things to know: There is a new AC / DC album. It is produced by Brendan O'Brien, who has worked with Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen, among others. And it's really very good.

Sure, it's too long - Just under an hour, with 15 tracks of which about 10 are the real guardians. But here's the interesting part - is not a boring album, and does not sound like AC / DC by numbers. A lot of people like to say that every AC / DC album sounds the same, but that's not really true. Sure, there's a basic formula of the great rock, hard blues song in its database, but each record puts a subtle Back in the basic sound. Fly On The Wall was noisy, with vocalist Brian Johnson buried in the mix, it is probably heavier cases, more albums ugly. Razor's Edge was ultra-energized, and featured some of his best compositions from the late 70s. AND Stiff Upper Lip found exploring raw electric blues-rock a deeper way than he had done in years, almost sounding artistically mature.

Black Ice continues that maturation process. Songs like the title track and "Stormy May Day" are built around fierce grooves reminiscent of Physical Graffiti era Led Zeppelin, the latter also has a touch of the murderer of the late 80s British rock band Blue Messiah screaming to it. "Decibel" is even more stark, showing a riff ZZ Top would have killed again in 1974. And "Wheels", "Spoilin 'For A Fight" and "War Machine" are all the classic AC / DC steps. And perhaps the best of the album is its efficiency. Yes, 15 songs in 55 minutes or so, but do the math and see who joins the majority of songs come mark in less than four minutes. There is a song overstays its welcome here, even the lame as "Big Jack" and "Roll She likes rock n '" are also before actually doing damage to the listening experience.

Black Ice is an album of hard rock sound that shows the strengths of the band even as it sounds surprisingly down to earth. O'Brien contribution has been to make the sound of the band as live human beings playing music in a room instead of throwing riffs gods of Mount Olympus. If this will be his last studio album (and his age, the odds are decent that is less) is a good way out. Even have found a way a bit to age gracefully, something I am sure that hardly anyone expected.

Black Ice continues that maturation process.
