By contrast, The American mustang is descended from the light horse and escaped to draft horses, bred mixed with the Spanish and others. In general, these horses are thought to have little or no Spanish blood remaining.
Charged with the supervision of wild horses and burros is the BLM, which manages wild horses and burros from public lands in a "multiple use" mission that considers natural resources and uses such as grazing cattle ranch. The BLM monitors herd health and population size offering different animals to be adopted. Since 1973, the BLM placed more than 213,000 horses and burros in homes through its adoption program. In 2005, Congress enacted a new law to keep the herds at levels that requires a healthy population BLM horses and burros place for selling more than 10 years of age or for whom adoption has failed three times. According to BLM, this affects about 8400 horses and burros.
Previously, wild horses have found success in new homes. JB Andrews, a large black mustang, has successfully competed in dressage, while the intermediaries I school in the Grand Prix level.
