Lucas Oil Stadium - the new home of the Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts are enjoying their stay in their new home - the Lucas Oil Stadium. The retractable roof stadium is a stadium located in Indianapolis Indiana, which opened in the second half of 2008. The new stadium replaces the RCA Dome, which was longtime home of the Colts. This stadium was built in preparation for the Super Bowl XLVI, to be held in 2012. Apart from the stadium, a new skyscraper JW Marriot Indianapolis is being built as part of preparation for the Super Bowl.
The architecture firm behind the design of the new stadium is HKS, Inc. Walter P. Moore as the structural engineer. Similar to another stadium, Lucas Oil Stadium has a retractable roof and wall of windows allows the Colts to play outdoors. The concept kinetic architecture used in the design of the stadium to be a multi-functional facility with the ease of conversion for increased ROI.
The stadium naming rights were purchased by Lucas Oil for about $ 120 million for 20 years, so it is affectionately known by some as The Lucas commentators. Despite the state of art facilities for the new home of the Indianapolis Colts, a retro look is instilled in the design as a result Indianapolis fans of a country house appearance of the sports venues that were popular decades ago. The construction of the stadium costs $ 720,000,000 which was raised through a cooperative effort of the government of Indiana and the Colts.
The number of seats in the new stadium for football games is 5,000 more than the last. Now, 63,000 fans can watch from the stands during the game. In the case of Indiana will host the Super Bowl, the seating capacity can be increase to 70,000. For basketball games, the number of seats of the installation can go beyond 70,000. Features include two huge new stadium Daktronics Scoreboards high-definition measurement of each 97 feet wide and 53 feet high and located in the northwest and southeast corners of the stadium.
The retractable roof Lucas Oil Stadium was designed by Uni-Systems. The ceiling is divided lengthwise into two retractable panels, each sliding down the slope of the roof of the stadium when is open. Each panel weighs 2.7 million pounds each. It takes nine minutes to open the roof, twelve minutes to closing and it is fully automated. As is unique about these is that retractable roof is the ceiling for the first time that divides along. However, the whole stadium is not waterproof roofing to remain near most of the year.
A unique design of the stadium addition is the large window wall allowing additional mobile light when closed and gives an environment more open when open. This is another first for the stadium because it is the largest movable glass wall in the world. The first NBC Sunday Night Football of the season NFL 2008 was held at Lucas Oil Stadium. Unfortunately, the home team was unable to snatch the win.
