To be quite common in young adults and older people, bulging disc can affect almost anyone. Most times are not cause for panic and are often discovered by accident, while another medical problem considered. Abnormalities such as bulging or protruding discs, see high rates of magnetic resonance imaging in patients with and without back pain. Some discs most likely begin to bulge as part of both the process aging and the process of intervertebral disc degeneration. A bulging disc is not necessarily a sign that something serious is happening to your spine.
It is time to consider serious bulging disc once the herniated disc sticks out enough to cause a narrowing of the spinal canal. If there are bone spurs present on the facet joints behind the herniated disc, the combination may cause narrowing of the spinal canal in the area. Sometimes this is known as segmental spinal stenosis. A lumbar herniated disc is a herniated disc that affects the lower back.
Each of the twenty-four vertebrae of the spine is identified by a code. The lumbar spine is where low officially starts back. The lumbar spine is directly below the cervical and thoracic regions and above the sacrum. The code that identifies the lumbar spine L1-L5 is more frequently involved in back pain because it carries most of the weight of the organs and is subject to the larger forces and tensions along the spine.
L1 is approximately true when the spinal cord ends. Here is where it divides into many nerve roots different traveling to the lower body and legs. Horsetail represents this collection of nerve roots. Cauda equina means ponytail and then describes the nerve root at the end of the spinal cord.
The intervertebral discs are flat, circular structures that are about three quarters of an inch thick. Are made of tough outer rings of tissue called the annulus that lies between the vertebrae. The interior of the disk is filled with a soft white gelatinous substance called the nucleus pulposus. Flat, circular plates of cartilage connected to the vertebrae above and below each disc. The intervertebral discs separate the vertebrae, but they act as shock absorbers for the spine. Compress when weight is put on them and retract when weight is removed.
The intervertebral discs make up approximately third of the length of the column and is the largest organ in the body without its own blood supply. The discs receive their blood supply through the movement, because they absorb nutrients. Discs expansion while at rest that allows them to absorb the nutrient-rich liquid. When this process is inhibited through movement repetitive, injury or poor posture, the discs become thinner and more prone to injury. This may be a cause of progressive degeneration of the structure and function disk over time.
