Women not only for children - amazing health problems of middle age

One of the advantages of reaching midlife is that finally ended with all these issues that make childhood and adolescence as a pain in the neck, as the need for bedtime as well as dental and eye checkups; having to worry about using protection during sex and smoking, getting all those shots to prevent disease and the use of helmets to prevent sports injuries; need to eat all vegetables and avoid sugar as well as classes do not need a gym. What a relief to let these issues fade right along with our memories of tetherball in the schoolyard!

Not so fast. Would it surprise you to know that you still have to be aware each and every one of the above so-called "children / adolescents' health problems?

For example, what is there to establish bedtime? The obvious reason that we needed enforced, regular schedules to go Each night was so we could get enough sleep. Being tired and sleepy the next day the school did everything by the concentration of bad humor in a bad mood. Now that we are in middle age, many of us believe that sleep is no longer a problem. This is not is the case at all. It remains essential to our health and wellbeing. Recent studies have shown that not only sleep disorders often indicate a serious health problem but that lack of sleep can actually cause health problems, such as weight gain. Surveys have shown that almost two thirds of adults over sixty-five have problems of sleep, but that less than 15 percent of them have been formally diagnosed with a sleep problem. Why? Because no mention of sleep problems our health care providers. Our mothers were right - still need to worry about our bedtime.

Once we have got the glasses we need and all our baby teeth are gone, we no longer need to get regular eye tests and dental check-ups as we did in our years younger, right? Again - no. While our vision remains stable from adulthood until they need bifocals, there are common eye diseases starting to occur in middle age, and can lead to blindness if not diagnosed. And although we no longer have our baby teeth, other dental problems taking the lead in the median age range, such as inflammation of the gums that has been shown to be associated with diabetes and heart disease. Thus, continued regular dental checks and eye are as important as in our younger years.

And what about sex at midlife and beyond? We have moved from groping and searched the back seat to more sophisticated maneuvers in a comfortable bed, and finally, finally no longer have to worry about pregnancy. So do not need protection, or that many of us think. While it is true that once you reach menopause you can not get pregnant (note: make sure you menopause completed before taking this as the diagnosis of menopause can be difficult), still needed protection during sexual intercourse due to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Yes, we can still get those, and in some cases are even more prone to infection after menopause, even after a hysterectomy. And although it is past the childbearing years, and our reproductive organs seem to have no further use, you still need pelvic exams and Pap smears. Also important in this review to discuss with our health care providers need STD testing, if a new partner or the concern that the current partner is not monogamous, this test is a necessity.

Sexually transmitted infections are not the only threat deferred our teenage years, so is cigarette smoking. Many women in midlife seems to be no reason to stop smoking cigarettes at this age, as erroneously think the damage is already done all the years before smoking. This is not the case. No matter how many years one has smoked, stopping can prevent further damage heart, blood vessels and lungs, and in some cases can reverse some of the damage.

Also relevant to the lungs is the fact that asthma can starting in middle age, where once thought only to begin in childhood. The two main causes appear to be exposure to substances that damage the lungs, and recreational exposure to air pollution by adults who lead predominantly outside. Therefore, a new onset of shortness of breath at this age - even if occurs only with exercise - not necessarily mean that heart disease, remember that we can develop asthma now.

You thought you had finished with all those photos had to be horrible in childhood and adolescence? Sorry, you are not. There is a recommended immunization schedule for adults middle age and beyond, just as there are for children. At certain ages over 50 years and at certain intervals, you will need flu shots, some types of pneumonia, tetanus, and in some cases, shingles and hepatitis. Ask your primary care provider about these.

What to pack away from his helmet when he delivered his bike with training wheels? Probably could have done this because now you need a larger size helmet. But it takes a helmet. A recent report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that sports-related injuries in the population "Baby Boomers" was increasing, with more than 1 million injuries in this age group in 1998 alone, most of the lesions for cycling and basketball. The same report says head injury many associated with the bicycle is probably due to the fact that Baby Boomers wear helmets less than younger ones do.

The fact that exercise and proper nutrition are as important in midlife and beyond as in childhood can not come as a surprise. Regular exercise in this age been shown to increase longevity and well-being, postpone and possibly prevent dementia, stroke, heart disease and diabetes, and helps in the treatment of depression. It is important to know so that several different types of regular exercise is recommended at this age, including aerobic (cardiovascular) exercise, exercises weights or strength training, and exercises to improve balance and flexibility.

What we eat as we age is as important as it was in our years younger. A particular form healthy eating, the Mediterranean diet has been shown to stave off dementia, prevent heart disease and diabetes, maintain a healthy level of cholesterol, and improve longevity. One study showed that this diet, even improve sexual function in some women! This diet is exactly as expected given its name: a whole lot of natural foods such as vegetables, fruits and nuts, lots of fish and olive oil, moderate amounts of wine, and limited amounts of foods containing refined sugar. The control of portions of the food we eat is even more important at this age. Our metabolic rate decreases with age, what facilitates weight gain while eating the same amount of food as in our younger years.

So, as rummaging through the attic of his mother watching their antique dolls, baseball bat and Ouija board, and breathing a sigh of relief that you no longer have to worry about being chosen for a baseball team or your best friend copied dress your paper doll is, do not rely too much about his health. Although once you have thought to take care of yourself health-wise it would be easier as you get older, you know now that that's not true. Make your appointments for regular checkups, get more than five hours of sleep each night, protecting their use in sex, especially with a new partner, quit smoking, regardless of how old you are, get recommended immunizations, be careful and use your helmet and seat belt and exercise regularly and eat well.
