Mexico's Carnival, Fiesta Forever! It's more than balls ...

It is held the week before Ash Wednesday and normally lasts a little less a week, Carnival in Mexico has a long tradition dating from the nineteenth century. Coming from the Latin word Carnavale, meaning "farewell to meat," Carnival refers to the week before Lent (Lent), which promotes carefree abandonment and indulgence.

Queens of beauty and fiery mood, what more could you want?

Kick-off begins with the burning of El Mal Humor (bad mood), in which a doll, usually a model of political unpopularity of day, is hanged and burned, followed by a burst of confetti and fireworks. This kicks off nearly a week of festivities in some of the most popular coastal cities Mexico, including Campeche, Mazatlan, Veracruz and Merida, to name a few.

Host cities hold parades all day, depending on the theme of the local carnival, which differs from region to region. Parade floats showcase a variety of decorative landscape inspired in Mexico and usually with flowers bright and live entertainment. Some parades require an entrance fee, and visitors are advised to get tickets to the parade, as quickly as possible through local tourist office or hotel.

Mexpipe Challenge Surf Carnaval, February 16 to 20

For the first time a surf carnival was added this year Zacatela beach in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. This festival with a relaxed-like Woodstock will be held on the beach and have DJs, a fashion show, party electronic dance and break dancing competitions and a lot of surfing in the Pacific Ocean.

Men and women can compete in surfing competitions and and enjoy the festivities offered in conjunction with the carnival. The Grand Carnival Parade takes place on Tuesday the 20th followed by a costume contest and an awards ceremony at Town Hall.

Mazatlan-February 8 to 20

Mazatlan, home of the Carnival celebration in the world third largest after those of New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro, attracts more than 400,000 people each year. From February 8-20, thrill-seekers fill the Malecon (sea promenade) through the center of the High Pots beach, singing and dancing along roving mariachi bands. You can also see the regional Sinaloa bands with lots of brass, and rock bands that are installed along the road.

food lovers can enjoy outdoor food festivals in the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone) and the Plaza Machado. Prominent dishes on hand include Mazatlán's famous tossed fish (grilled fish), shrimp with mango (mango shrimp) and smoked marlin (smoked marlin.) After enjoying some fresh seafood, pots Atlas port offers a unique presentation of fireworks February 17 offshore represents a mock naval battle, in commemoration of Mazatlan's 1864 victory over the French Navy.

Veracruz - 13 to February 21

Known for its Afro-Caribbean-influenced culture, the port city of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico hosts the second largest Carnival in the country. Parade participants can expect to see Dracula, drag queens and women in bright dresses dancing to the infectious Caribbean / Spanish rhythms along Miguel Avila Camacho Boulevard. Groups dance in the neighboring towns of peacock and pheasant feather headdresses. A must during Carnival in Veracruz is dancing! Visitors should not miss the chance to dance in the zocalo, or central square. Salsa, cumbia, reggae and marimba are popular, but jarochos (people from Veracruz) hold a special place in their hearts for music and dance known as the danzon, which first arrived from Cuba in 1880. For live music, visit the base and / or the boardwalk on 21 February with Mexican artists.

And when not dancing, there's nothing like sitting on the riverbank Jamapa in the nearby city of Boca del Rio and enjoying succulent grilled red snapper (Red snapper), or a Return to Life (fish and Veracruz-style seafood cocktail, a known hangover remedy) at bargain prices.

Cozumel - 14 to February 21

Known as one of the most popular celebrations of the Mexican Caribbean, Cozumel has commemorated this pre-Lenten celebration for nearly 100 years bringing Carnival to life in an exciting explosion of color and music. Cozumel's unique celebration includes a variety of costumed characters, such as Harlequins, rumba dancers, the Spanish gypsy women, fairies, princesses, bullfighters and kings and queens that can be seen during the week.

This Carnival is also considered a version family vacation and begins with the coronation of Emperor and Empress and the King and Queen of Carnival. As the week progresses and the momentum builds, the celebration of the island continues with colorful parades, street fairs every night and every day music performances and dancing in the streets of downtown San Miguel.

Merida-14 to February 21

The Yucatan Peninsula's capital city of Merida is one of the many cities that celebrate Carnival, with the theme this year focused on "The Circus". Since 1980, the people of Yucatan celebrate the start of "The Jacaranda", a popular character ever was king of the Carnival and annually displays the most colorful and fun costume. On Monday during Carnival week, the ladies don hand-embroidered dresses and the gentlemen sparkling guayaberas white dress shirt typical of the region.

Other important carnival destinations in Mexico include Ensenada, Baja California, Guaymas, along the Sea of Cortez in Sonora, Tepic, Nayarit, and San Juan Chamula, Chiapas, said to be one of the most indigenous festivals in the country.
