Fifty years ago, in Shawinigan Falls, Quebec, installed a plant industry generating large foundry in the country back from the valley of Saint-Maurice River, a hundred miles west of the city of Quebec. A few years later, north of that city power plant and smelter were built in the Saguenay River on the island Maligne. Arvida Soon after, a few miles east on the same river, saw the beginnings of the largest in the world, an aluminum smelter was opened to the domestic industry after the closure of the Saguenay. Now, on the west coast of Canada, part of the region of British Colombia has been opened by the Kitimat smelter plant of the Aluminum Company of Canada.

Opening New Frontiers

In Guyana, the country of the legendary El Dorado, huge deposits of minerals rich in alumina have been developed. Fifty-four years the mineral reddish-brown has dug in beds averaging fifteen to forty-five feet thick. In 1958 the area around the community of Mackenzie was producing 300,000 tons per year of bauxite. Today storage containers in modern cargo docks nearly three million tons a year on ships bound for smelters in Quebec Saguenay.

Ten years ago few people had heard of Weipa in the north coast throughout Queensland, Australia. In 1955 an Australian geologist discovered in this isolated area which has proved to be more world bauxite deposit. Seventy-three square miles were blocked and in 1968 with 516 million tons of proven ore reserves. Scout drilling plus another 160 square kilometers revealed a potential of 1,200 million tonnes. Suddenly, Australia was in the business of bauxite to an extent which made the industry aluminum around the world sit up and take notice.

Weipa mining operation is very simple. When the mineral layer is reached, sometimes 30 feet thick, not needed blasting. Chargers simply lift your truck bed and dump 50 tons of aluminum body. Is taken to the processing plant which improved the ore grade by the size and washing. Conveyors then take the washed, treated ore to an open book, where a conveyor system transfers load of ore ships.

Already more than 40 million U.S. dollars had been spent on this development last year. In addition to the modern plant and construction of the port, there is a new home community of more than 350 people, with air-conditioned houses, a school, shops, a theater, police and hospital services. From being a desert in 1957 is Weipa now one of the main ports of shipment of bulk materials in Australia. Maximum capacity of the facility in 1963 was half a million tonnes annually. This increased four million tons in 1968, and looks to reach seven million tons annually in the early seventies.

Thus, in Guyana and Australia have opened new frontiers. But in these, as with other countries, the spread of industry in border areas has not been an unmixed blessing. Trees and vegetation blown down, and open pit mines to replace the wild beauty. Of course, the Creator put in the minerals of the earth for man to use, and rich in fact, this land is in mineral wealth! It is also intended to God that this land is a paradise. But the man in his exploitation of mineral resources of the land often leaves scars unsightly and makes lots of desolate desert land.
