SCR Test - How to test and verify Silicon Controlled Rectifier

Proof of SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) can be done using a Multiple analog meter or specialize tester (Like the Pico electronic atlas component analyzer) designed to review the semiconductor devices with ease. SCR can be found in many electronic circuits. Part numbers like 100-6 FOR3G and RCC are very common used in computer monitors. Some call as thyristor SCR but actually the thyristor word must not be associated exclusively with the silicon controlled rectifier. In fact, it is a general name given to all layers pnpn four devices, including the commonly used SCR. The diac, triac, and SCS are the other popular devices belonging to the family of thyristors.

SCR has three pins Gate (G), the anode (A) and cathode (C). In order to identify the pin out, you have to find semiconductor data book the famous teacher of semiconductor Philips ECG replacement guide. The data book will list the general specifications of the SCR as volts and amps. To learn more details about a SCR particular, you can always search from the Internet. In general, SCR manufacturers provide complete data sheet for those who want it.

Once you know the pin outs of the G, A and C legs can start to test the SCR. If you have the Pico electronic atlas component analyzer tester, you have to do is connect the three small clips on each pin of the SCR (any part number will do). The tester will begin to analyze the SCR and ask it to the screen as "power thyristor or low sensitive "before you tell the exact pin outs of G, A and C. After the first test, the tester finally displayed on the LCD response. The door is red, green and blue cathode is the anode. It is a simple process and you will know the answer within 10 seconds. If there is a problem in the SCR, the tester would not able to show results but shows a short reading.

If you do not have this tester for SCR control, I am showing another easy way on how fast test SCR. You need an analog meter set X1 ohm. Place the red probe to the cathode and the black probe to pin the anode. At this time the meter shows no reading. Now gently move the black probe and touch the Gate pin (black probe still touching the plug on the anode) and you'll notice the meter pointer starts, as shown in the image (Resistance).

Removing the black probe of the GATE pin (black probe still touching the plug on the anode) you realize that resistance is still there (low resistance). This is due to the conduct of SCR as the battery meter is usually able to provide more current that current exploitation. If at this stage that took the black probe to the anode pin and reconnect, the pointer dropped to infinity (high resistance). If the SCR could contain resistance then the SCR is considered good. If you can not hold then the SCR is defective.

Conclusion SCR-practice test more often to see how the result as. Try some different part numbers and the power SCR and if no resistance using ohm X1, you can try ohms X10, etc.
