The bicycle in Japan
One of the first things that foreigners arriving in Japan are often are surprised by the large number of bicycles you can see speed through the city streets and sidewalks. Almost everyone, from grandmothers to well-dressed executives on their way to the office to use a Jitensha "(Bike) as a mainstream form of transport. Whether used to pick up children from preschool, pedaling to the nearest train station, and traveling to study or work, the bicycle has become an integral part of Japanese society. Even the police, which often can be seen by night patrols on bicycles, the preferred in regard to navigating the network of narrow streets of the cities that make up the majority of the Japanese and peoples. The two wheels are indeed everywhere, and even the point where the ample parking areas near most shopping centers and railway stations are devoted exclusively to accommodate bicycles.
Despite its convenience and attractiveness as a cheap form of transport, are also a great physical discomfort and possible threat to riders and pedestrians who do not learn the rules of the road. These rules are: there are no rules of the road. In the theory of law bicycles are for riding on city streets and sidewalks, unless the signs indicate otherwise. In reality, however this regulation is completely ignored by everyone. More times than I can remember I found myself
jump out of the way of some over enthusiastic cyclist who chose the path of least resistance would be run directly on me. Or felt the sudden swoosh of air touches my arm like a crazy driver appears out of nowhere like a ghost at night invisible behind madly ran fast as I
walking home.
In spite of these difficulties the bike in Japan for good or evil here to stay, and as the saying goes, "if you can not beat em join em." For those of you who are thinking of buying one when you arrive you will be pleased to know they are pretty cheap, the average running cost around 10,000 yen, and used bicycles available for less. The most common bikes for daily use are typically one-speed models with steel frames that include a kickstand, lights generator fenders, front brake caliper and rear disc brakes and a steel mesh basket attached to the handlebars to carry food and other items.
