The stock of Blue Chip, Rip
Have you ever heard of a "Collection of Bo Derek? Neither do I. But it is a term contained in the seventh edition of Barron's Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms. When I was in college, we had to buy this book, and gives me ashamed to say that the first issue I bought back then was not half the thickness seems that the current version. And I think the reason for the swelling new edition is that many terms of date have not yet been eliminated.
So what action responding to the category of Bo Derek? The dictionary says it is a ...
"Perfect actions with an exemplary record of revenue growth, product quality, and stock price appreciation. These stocks carry the name of the movie 10 Bo Derek in which women were described as perfect. "
I am sorry, but I've been in this industry the better part of two decades and no one - no rider, type of institutional sales, or banking, has ever used this term. If you happen to run across one of those magical perfect investment in the next two years, I'll be sure not compared with an age of 52, although still attractive, actress ...
The term is simply no longer relevant. Like the Blue Chip term.
One of Blue Chip, so says the dictionary, is "common shares of a company known nationally which has a long history of earnings growth and / or payment of dividends and a reputation for quality management, products and services ... "
Have you seen any of these recently?
Constellation Energy? That fails the test drive, although there may be some redemption there. General Motors and Ford? They fail the test of management, too, and, until recently, not the reputation of quality products. AIG? Fannie and Freddie? Lehman? Just do not, period.
Beyond the definition of Blue Chip is a connotation that has developed over many decades, driven by companies like General Electric. The connotation is that Blue Chips = Safety.
The notion that there are safe places to invest in the domestic equities market is dead forever. He died when Bear Stearns collapsed during a weekend and Lehman Brothers filed Chapter 11.
The Blue Chip idea was killed along with those two companies. Take advantage of IBM, for example. Not the king of technology that was once granted, but Big Blue has been a classic Chip Blue since I got in this business. While his work has had a positive response, the company has been largely above the fray - flawless media communication by the digressions of large financial data and business poorest groups of domestic automakers. But IBM can be said is a "safe" to put your money? Not anymore. The collapse of 2008 is going to scare away a whole generation of investment.
A sense of capital markets, this could be the best thing that ever happened. No matter how bright a CEO, no matter how much economic impact the company operates, and no matter how interwoven in American society, any company - public or private - is a simple investment. This is the lesson ... (cough - along with no more than yourself leverage to buy assets that can not afford) ... United States has to take from 2008.
So forget about chip stocks class completely. Forget the whole concept.
Do not forget to invest in U.S. equity markets. And here's why ...
It is true that U.S. reserves got criticized in 2008. But of the top 200 stocks that actually appreciated in 2008, 196 of them have market values of $ 2000 million dollars or less. This means that populations of the top 200 2008 results, 98% were small-caps. In such a list, you have to separate bulletin board issues with the volume of legitimate trade, but the fact is that several small-caps in a market out tremendously horrible. Below is a sample List:

So even in the worst market conditions most of us have ever lived, with a small cap investment shined. Looking back on past 10 years, the Dow Jones industrial average has a 10-year annualized return of -0.45%. The S & P 500 is -3.02%. Both indices were decimated by 2008, contributing to the much talked about 'lost decade' for investors. The Russell 2000 has, however, is known as small-cap index, a 10-year annualized return of 1.72%. If you look back at any period of 20 years in 1926 stocks, small-caps did better than large-cap almost all the time.
Small-cap investing is risky? Yes Always has been and will continue. And so it was all a bag BSC stock ...
