Synthetic corks
A synthetic cork is designed to look and function like natural corks
Synthetic corks from plastic compounds designed to look and "pop" as the natural cork, but without the risk of TCA contamination. Disadvantages of some synthetic wine stoppers are a risk of harmful air into a bottle after only 18 months, and the difficulty of its removal from the bottle and cork with plastic to cover the wine. James Laube of Wine Spectator notes that some also may impart a chemical taste to the wine light.
Unlike natural corks, synthetic wine corks are made from many non-biodegradable material, but either recycled as # 4 or # 7 (see the identification code resin) in many communities. There are two main techniques for the production of synthetic wine closures: injection molding and extrusion (mono-and co-).
