How to protect your wireless network
Wireless networks are large and allow us to build networks quickly, easily and without the hassle of making physical installation of cables, etc.
However, wireless networks must be secure from the outside / users otherwise unauthorized people Use your network to their criminal intentions. An example of this is people who use its wireless connection to connect to the Internet and download illegal content. As is your Internet connection is your responsibility.
So how does it protect your wireless network?
Well there are several things you can do so here are some basic safety measures:
- TURN OFF SSID Broadcasting - Once you have all the necessary equipment (wireless clients or devices) on your network, turn SSID broadcasting so that nobody can see your wireless network.
- Change the name of the default SSID to something else. For example, a Netgear SSID name easily identifies your network and hardware.
- Change the default router name and passwords. Most routers have the same username admin and the default password. So all an attacker needs to do is access your router with default settings and then lock you out.
- Use MAC address filtering - to establish what devices can connect to your wireless network by MAC address. Use ipconfig / all to identify the MAC address.
- Using IP filtering or IP address reservations IP only those can access the network.
- Use port filtering / blocking to block the ports not be opened.
- Use authentication - either PSK or EAP - DO NOT STOP an Open Authentication.
- Use encryption to protect your data. WEP and WPA 2 WPA encryption types without however recommended.
- Set the session time so that people can not access your network after hours.
- Use an analyzer wireless networks such as NetStumbler (free) to test its network.
With the above security measures for wireless network will help to protect your wireless network from unauthorized use and prying eyes.
