The Appeal of Diamonds
Throughout the history of mankind, diamonds have passed through the power, prestige, courage, devotion, invincibility, love and lust.
But in reality, diamonds are just rocks, a gem mineral composed of simple carbon crystals that have formed inside the Earth for thousands and millions of years.
So what is this gem that makes it stand above rubies, emeralds, sapphires and other stones beautiful in the world?
Diamonds used to be rare. It was only through the technology and the latest discovery of diamond mines in Africa has been marketed world as a commercial item.
But there was a moment that any diamond that was mined and processed was reserved only for the king. St. Louis IX of France still had a sumptuary law that made it.
Today, however, since the discovery of diamond mines in Africa, diamonds are not rare, but still coveted and sold worldwide for its beauty and value.
During the 1800s, prospectors found vast deposits of diamonds in South and Central Africa.
One particular area in southern Africa was Kimberly, and because of the enormous amount of deposits of diamonds are found here, these mines became to be known as kimberlites.
This sudden explosion in the supply of diamonds flooded the market, where thousands of prospects reached the kimberlite mine. This caused prices to plummet diamond from 500 dollars and ten cents a carat.
The diamond market came to a sudden turn when a young man named Cecil Rhodes took the stage. Rhodes, who later would help build British colonial Africa, saw an opportunity and formed the Company Minera De Beers are grouped diamond miners and prospectors to control the supply.
With this lineup of producers of diamonds, Rhodes was able to to control and dictate the market, also avoiding a lot of diamonds on the market and reduce prices.
By manipulating supply and demand for diamonds, De Beers cartel became the most successful in the 20th century.
Today, the De Beers Corporation owns and controls 90 percent of world diamond supply raw uncut o.
Due to the success of De Beers' control of industry, diamonds have prospered and its precious and its value have been preserved. And today, the prestige and mystique of diamonds are known throughout the world.
It is called the king of gems, and its universal appeal makes it expensive and coveted. What woman does not want diamond jewelry?
What man has not been loved more so as a diamond engagement ring or diamond earrings given to a loved one as a gift?
Modern technology and the discovery could have made the diamond more accessible and less rare, but has not reduced its prestige or the fascination of mankind with it.
History has dictated events that have made the precious gem diamond as it is known today, and only we can follow the examples of best people we have before us fall in love with his brilliance and beauty.
