Foxconn A6VMX Review

I recently purchased a motherboard with socket AM2 cheap relitivly produced by Foxconn. Foxconn is the A6VMX. This review is based in the use of the motherboard for about three months to determine their characteristics.

First I would like to start with the price. It is a fairly cheap motherboard price around £ 31 ($ 47). At this price I was expecting a weak motherboard property of low quality with low relitivly capacitors and external ports but there is little I was wrong.

The motherboard has the following rear I / O connector;

1 set 5.1 channel Audio jacks (3 jacks)
1x parallel port
1x PS / 2 keyboard port
1x PS / 2 mouse
1x VGA port
4x USB 2.0 Ports
1x RJ45 LAN port
1x Serial Port

This is enough for many people, but lacking DVI and HDMI that is expected with a motherboard that costs this amount. I'm glad to see that this board comes with PS / 2 PS / 2 Mouse that many motherboards are moving away to save space in the I / O board. It also includes 5.1 audio I've been very happy with when playing music through my X-540 speakers. The sound quality is very good.

Inside this motherboard offers a wide range of connections for the PC builder to work. The motherboard has the following ports for internal uses;

1x CD-connector
1x Front Audio header
1 x S / PDIF
1x IRDA
1x TV-out header
1x floppy connector
1x Front panel connector
2x USB 2.0 connectors support additional 4 ports
1x Speaker
4x SATA II connectors
2x USB Power Header
1x IDE connector

I was surprised to see so many SATA ports on a motherboard of this price, but it's nice to have included so many. Also has a floppy connector and an IDE connector. These are great if you have any old hard disk or floppy disk to save old data. IDE Performance can with it seems to be able to run both drives at the same time. I am also sure many people would be glad to see that included S / PDIF and output TV headers for use in a computer setup media.

The board has the following expansion slots;

1 x PCIe x16

1 x PCIe x1

2 x PCI

The small amount of expansion slots is mainly due to the fact that this is a Micro ATX board. I installed Nvidia 9400GT 1GB an issue with a dual slot cooler, which unfortunately makes the PCI slots unusable and only two on the board of this could be a problem for some people. Another problem is that when you install a graphics card like a Radeon HD5770 longer going to miss two SATA ports behind the graphics card, which horizonatly are not mounted. Another small problem with the design of this board is where the male 24-pin power supply is mounted. It is half way down the board on the right side it means to have the giant cable wire 24 across the upper slots of RAM and CPU fan connection. This is not too much of a problem, but creates an ugly and could prevent cooling.

This board is relitivly cold running when combined with an Athlon 64 X2 and 2 GB of RAM. The northbridge heatsink is slightly hot to touch the same as the southbridge. When I turned the PC off after prolonged use, I found that the capacitors and VRM (voltage regulation modules) where he is also very cool. The board also appears to be fairly solid construction with the CPU cooler mounting shall be securely fixed and the sinks for northbridge and southbridge be aligned and perfectly safe. Moreover, this forum does not have many solid capacitors that many people want these days, but I had no any problems with this as all good Japanese brands capacitors on this motherboard.

With the Athlon 5600 installed I managed to overclock to 2.9GHz a stable 3.15Ghz just an improvement.

I do however feel that some very small issues with the software provided. Included with the motherboard;

Motherboard Drivers

Fox overclocking utility

Fox Logo

Fox Live Update

I have found that programs were all a little glitchy in addition to the overclocking utility. They do not seem to be fully matured yet and may need to be updated to improve stability and characteristics. The utulity Overclocking is great and I managed it to get a stable overclock. It also monitors temperature and tensions which seem to be more reliable than other tools hardware monitoring. Fox logo on the other side does not seem to work and for me is a bit risky to use as it messes with the BIOS to change the boot picture. After a mine of parameters unsuitable for change not do anything at all, so I did not touch it again. The Update tool is good but Fox has some some minor problems. It makes updating the BIOS and drivers easier but I would not recommend updating the BIOS with it, as no as stable and seems to play with the bios is quite risky as it is.

Overall I found this forum is stable, reliable and fairly fast with lots of features. I do however find that the software supplied is not large. Perhaps Foxconn will release some updates to improve, but so far I have decided not to mess with them. (Apart from a bit of overclocking using Fox One)
