28 tips for safe cycling

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 784 cyclists died in 2005 while riding a bicycle. In 2004, there were 725 deaths and for the four previous years, annual deaths from bicycle ranted 629-732 people each year.

Statistics of bicycle injuries are not readily available, as most go unreported.

Use the proper equipment

1. Make sure your bike it fits well and fits your size.

2. Equip your bike with safety equipment: a white lighthouse (preferably one that can be set to a flashing mode for use during the day to become more visible), reflectors and / or reflective tape or markings, a flashing red rear light (essential for riding at night), a horn or bell (sound signal so that drivers know where you are, or that you are there at all), and mirrors on the handlebars.

3. Each time before use, make sure the tires are properly inflated, the brakes work, and nothing is loose on the bike.

4. Always wear a properly fitted helmet to protect you in case of a fall or an accident. (Consider the possibility of putting a mirror on your helmet, too.)

5. Use bright, neon colors and / or reflective clothing, even during the day.

6. At night, wear a reflective jacket or vest or a triangle security.

Plan ahead

7. Know the rules of the road and bike specific rules for your area

8. Plan to ride slow or residential areas where possible to avoid the traffic of fast moving center.

9. Avoid narrow road widths and choose roads where there is more room for bikes and cars to maneuver if possible.

10. Stay alert. Do not drive with headphones or an iPod. And NEVER use your cell phone while cycling!

11. Never hurry. When you're in a hurry, you can get careless or take unnecessary risks. Also makes it more likely that you could come and go quickly and the car drivers would not even see.

When riding a bicycle

12. Use your flashlight, even during the day, so drivers have a better chance of seeing you.

13. Use the mirrors to know what is going on around you at all times.

14. A walk in the street with other traffic, not on the sidewalk, traveling in the same direction as vehicle traffic engine and not against it.

15. The knowledge and use hand signals. Be sure to give plenty of advance notice of when to take a walk. Then be sure to look over your shoulder to make sure your path is clear before making the actual change.

16. Be consistent and predictable so that drivers know what to do. Drive in a straight line. Do not swerve, weave in and out of traffic or parked cars, or doing anything irregular or sudden movement.

17. Obey traffic signs, signals and road markings and pedestrian performance - like any other vehicle on the road.

18. Use the horn or bell if you cross in front of another vehicle giving an audible signal, which is more likely to get attention from other motorists.

19. Make contact visual motorists, if possible, so you know you are watching.

Drive defensively

20. Watch for hazards such as potholes, puddles, gravel loose, spare parts of cars, drain grates, stones, debris or trash, parked cars opening their doors, stray animals, and other vehicles.

21. Ride to the left of the parking lane to avoid hitting a car door opening unexpectedly in front of you.

22. At a red light stop behind another car. Do not pull up beside the first car at the light where you will be in the blind spot and the risk of being beaten if the car makes a right turn and the driver do not know is there.

23. When you follow a vehicle that moves slowly, be patient. It may be preparing to make a comeback. Do not try to rush past or stand beside her in the driver's blind spot.

24. Always look behind you (above the shoulder) before making a turn of other vehicles, other Bicycle and pedestrian.

25. Always look back (above the shoulder) before changing its position in the traffic lane as a vehicle could be preparing to come to your side or pass you.

26. Never deviate in and out of traffic or in and out of the parking lane. Maintain constant placement in your lane.
