Heat and ice packs - what and when?
Also known as a heating pad, heating pad is a pad used for warming parts of the body to control pain. Many episodes of pain come from the effort or strain, which creates tension in the muscles and soft tissues. This tension can constrict circulation, sending pain signals to the brain. facilitates the application of heat
pain:
* Widening the blood vessels surrounding the area of pain. The increased blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients to help heal damaged muscle tissue.
* Encourage sensitive skin and therefore reducing the pain signals being transmitted to the brain.
* Increased flexibility (and decreasing painful stiffness) from soft tissue surrounding the affected area, including the muscles and connective tissue.
The use of heat is often recommended for aching pain and muscle pain and articulate. It has its greatest benefit for conditions that are more long standing or chronic, as the old sports injuries and joint pain that often occurs in cold weather. Some people say you can say that when the rain comes as his joint pain. This is probably due to a change in barometric pressure.
Over time, our grandmothers, a red shirt that used to be widely used to "keep the heat in" and a product called pharmacies "Lana Wawns Wonder" was sold. This was used to wrap around painful areas. Of course, had to be red otherwise not work!
How times have changed. These days we can alternate between a hot water bottle or ice. An ice pack has different uses a hot water bottle. Instead of promoting the blood supply to the skin and making it red, which does exactly the opposite.
This reduces the blood supply to the surface which reduces the swelling of tissues. After all, not blood, mostly fluid? Ice packs also have the advantage of reducing pain and promote healing. Should be kept in the freezer at home so they can be used at any time. Usually 15 minutes of application in the area affected (wrapped in a cloth to avoid ice burns) will suffice. This can be repeated at hourly intervals, as needed.
In our clinics, we stock both flexible ice packs when not harden in the freezer to be wrapped around injured areas of wheat and lavender bags which can be heated microwave and keep their heat for long periods. While patients are educated best time to apply these means, which can very useful to relieve pain and inflammation.
