Brick Steps
Summary: Building steps leading down to your yard is not a project for a rookie. brick building measures can be done several ways. You can use the traditional brick and mortar method or use of interlocking concrete bricks, which require no mortar.
DEAR TIM: I need a set of brick steps to take me to a courtyard. I have no idea how to build brick steps, and I wonder if I could be out of my element. Is it difficult to build brick stairs like this, especially those set in mortar? I've seen the masons building brick steps ( ?????? ), And it seems that if I take my time, I might be able to succeed. What are the basic things you need to know to survive this project? Pete J., Lexington, KY
DEAR PETE: Building brick steps is not a project I would recommend for a rookie. That does not mean I do not think you can do work, means that there are multiple sets of skills required for professional results, especially since you want to put the brick with cement mortar.
You can do this project with concrete block brick and mortar "no" if you do not. They are linked in brick and set on a bed of crushed rock and compacted a thin layer of sand. Special outdoor adhesives can be used to connect the brick on the edge of a step below the bricks that create vertical stripes. I've seen these systems, but I am not produced the desired result.
There are two sets of brick steps nearly identical to my own home. I built them nearly twenty years, and are now as good as the day they are completed. I special paving bricks 1.5 inches thick, which are designed to be placed horizontally on the ground. These paving bricks were made in the oven at high temperature for a considerable time. This is why ice, snow and countless cycles of freezing and thawing have not deteriorated brick.
The best way to think of the traditional all brick steps is to think of two packages of plastic windows . Not all brick stairs you see, and below the finished brick. Think of the bricks ended only as a face. If the first set of steps is constructed correctly, the brick will cover these as well a pair of jeans covering her legs. If you are able to visualize this, you will be able to do this job.
He built the hidden set of steps using blocks Concrete ?????? . These blocks of brick plus finish are very heavy, thereby ensuring brick steps never crack or crumble, I poured a concrete platform that serves as the basis for steps brick. This concrete pad was 6-inches thick and half-inch steel rebar in the center space of a foot placed in a grid pattern like a puzzle. The steel is placed in the middle of the wet concrete. Take time to ensure that this concrete is poured into the compacted soil, and the finished surface of concrete is level.
The day after pouring the concrete, I started to use different size classes of concrete and concrete brick building the set of steps that had the same width, depth and height of the tread as the finished brick steps. Using this coarse masonry material allowed me to learn some tricks when working with mortar. It is imperative that the first package of concrete blocks are level from side to side and tilt the steps forward so that water flows through each step to the patio. I engineered in a slope of one-eighth inch per foot down to each tread to achieve good drainage. You do not ever want water to pool in one step.
My steps have ended grooves that are about 21.5 inches deep and are 6-inch strips high. The dimensions worked out this way because I was using brick that measures 4 inches thick wide by 8-inches long by 1.5 inches, and I wanted to keep to a minimum cuts. The only cuts I had to make were those of the sides of each tread on brick steps at the top to small brick walls on both sides of the steps. I urge to do their work through the steps for you to keep cuts to a minimum.
The mortar used to hold it all together was a mixture of fine sand and Portland cement. Do not use traditional brick mortar, as it is not really the correct material for the installation of brick flat on grade. normal is enough mortar for the walls, as the water can easily throw onto the ground. Portland cement is formulated to withstand the ice and snow when mixed, installed and cured properly. He used a mixture of three parts sand and one part Portland cement mortar for me.
The tube 6 inches in height for each step was simple to create. I put the brick in the narrow edge as the flat vertical face block created. The lower edge of the brick was flush with the brick rear tread below. The mortar-half inch wide joint lift the top brick and the brick floor rolling over adds up to 2 inches exactly. You can create a lift 6.5-inches high so if you add visible mortar joints in brick elevator.
The tread depth of 21.5 inches not only looks good, but it is safe and easy to walk. In my opinion, every time you build steps with bands less than 7.5 inches, you want a deep tread where you take an extra step before going down to the next tread. Depth 21.5-inch provides the space necessary to consider that extra step.
