Horse Color Genetics - What About Bays? (Part 2)
If you read the first part of this article now known characteristics basic color genetics in horses. To quickly review things, there are two basic color genes, black (B) and red (b). All horses have a combination of these two genes. All other colors are created by special genes called modifiers.
Before you start you need to understand some basic terms. The first we need to know is that the dominant gene will always show its features while recessive genes are silent when combined with a dominant gene. So a horse with a dominant color gene (B) and a recessive color gene (b) always show the dominant trait is black. Another important term to understand is homozygous. This means that the horse gene has two copies of the same color. For example, a horse chestnut (bb) should bring two copies of the gene would not be red or brown. The term of courtesy is heterozygous. This means that the horse carries one copy of the dominant gene and one copy of the recessive gene (Bb). The dominant gene show, but the recessive gene can arise when crossed with Another horse that carries the recessive gene.
The purpose of a modifier is to modify or change the outcome of a basic color gene. For example, the most common switch is the agouti gene. This particular gene makes the black in the coat of a horse to clarify what is brown. On the other hand does not affect the black color in items including horsehair tail and legs. If you have this shown in your mind you will quickly see that the agouti gene makes bay horses in color.
So how does the agouti gene? To make things simple let call the agouti gene (A). If a horse is black in base color (Bb) or (BB) and carries the agouti modifier is a bay (BBA) or (BBA). If not carry the agouti switch will remain black. Let's see this play on stage. Let's sire bay that is homozygous for black gene (BB) but is heterozygous for agouti (A) and cross with the black mare who is homozygous for black gene (BB).

The only stallion in their environment will agouti gene of the time, so half of their horses black mare bays. The other half of the time the foal does not receive the gene will go black and black.
Now the agouti gene is very common. That's why I do not see very many black horses. In addition, the agouti gene is also present in horses brown, but because they have not expressed any black. So you can have a chestnut mare carrying two agouti genes (homozygous) and breed her to a black stallion and end only bay foals.
How do you know if the horse chestnut agouti carries the gene? This can be difficult without genetic testing. Really the only other way would be to race to a black stallion and see if it launches a bay colt. Even a bay colt from a black horse means that she carries a gene agouti. Because the agouti gene is dominant all the foals that carry the black gene is the gene bays.
